I have to rehome a husky - where to begin?

Ok, so I don't have to... but I want to try and help.
The back ground info is this: (and this is cut and shut, without any prejudices, rights or wrongs, blame, etc)

Colleague bought a husky pup last year, he lives in a flat and the husky has always been in a pen outside. Colleagues GF doesn't allow the dog into the house, and colleague works full time, long hours. The pup gets lead walked every day, but other than that he's outside in his pen, on his own.
Initially the dog was taken to work in the van all day but that is no longer possible. He is over a year old now, with no training to speak of, but a lovely nature. The dog is on his own 95% of the time, colleague thinks that the dog deserves more and is now looking to rehome him.

He came to me asking if I wanted to take him. My current circumstances mean that this isn't an option (and even if it was, I'm not sure it would be a very good idea) Colleague has said that if I cannot take him he will advertise him on Epups (whatever the hell that is?) and Preloved.

I've done my best to explain why advertising him like that really isn't a very good idea, and have told him that I will do my best to help the dog find a suitable home where he will not be put at risk.

Please could you guys give me some advice on the best ways to try and find a dog like this a decent home? I thought about trying the husky forums, but I'm not sure how interested people would be in a one year old dog with very little training, plus to my untrained eye, he doesn't actually look very husky like :o
It's also worth noting that the dog is entire, although I'm sure I could persuade him to give it the 'op' before rehoming.

Any advice you can give me on finding this little dude a good home would be hugely appreciated.
 
Breed rescue... http://www.shcgbwelfare.org.uk/ some of them though restrict to KC papered dogs. Personally if it were me I'd be binning the GF and finding myself someone better who actually liked my dog. It does say three month wait on their website but phone and talk to them they might have some ideas about at least helping the dogs owner to cope.

Thanks, I'll look into that and try contacting somebody.

In reference to my above post, it doesn't look like getting the dogs bits off will be an option...
 
Try not to let him advertise on Epupz or Preloved really they are awful sites for dogs. You could also try the fanciers pages on FB most breeds have one and they might at least have someone whose recently lost a dog.
 
Try and find some pictures of bait dogs that are bound and taped up and show him what can happen if the dog is not rehomed responsibly either by him or a breed rescue.
Tell him castrating would atleast secure a pet home and rule out prospective back street breeders and a rescue would be more willing to help if the dog was neutered, castrated and chipped (tell him I will place him on our site) if he is done, just don't tell him where I am;):p, tell him to charge atleast what a rescue would to rehome and say this will put of those looking for a freebee and help recoup his castration fees, tell him to chip him and dont transfer details until he is settled and keep the kennel incase he needs returning (as back up is very important) tell him you would home check for him (I will give you a home check sheet):p
Make some poster for the vets (usually a good audience and you can hit lucky if someone has just lost theirs)

Obs breed rescue is the best port of call but if they can't help then try the above (another husky thats lost it;s appeal):( good on you for helping.
 
Right, I'm back, short shift pattern this week, hurrah. :p

http://www.shwauk.org.uk/ is the one I would recommend over SHCGB Welfare purely because they deal with all sibes, the latter only deal with KC registered ones (which gets my goat but let's not get into the politics here...)

They neuter all dogs that come in but for the sake of their finances it would be vastly preferable for him to neuter the dog first if possible (and of course this should be done if he persists in homing privately). This would also make it easier and quicker to place him in a foster home - all dogs go into foster with them, there's no kennels, and there is currently a scary waiting list for dogs to come in.

Process goes something like:

Fill out relinquish form
Volunteer contacts owner and arranges for basic behaviour assessment
Foster home is found
Dog transported to foster home
Neutered, vaccinated and chipped if not already done
Behaviourally assessed in foster home in multiple situations
Matched with prospective owner
Meets new owner
Adoption agreement signed

Full lifetime backup, home checks, behavioural help in new home etc. :)
