On my way home from seeing Vinnie tonight i just tuned off the main road and i hit a deer i got out the car and it was just lying their but it wasnt dead, i was bawling my eyes out but managed to pick her up and put her in the back of my tiny little toyota iq with my jacket over its head and i phoned my mum, got home and my mum had phoned the vet but they told us we'd have to take her to them so went up to vet with her on my knee, the vet examined her and said nothing was broken that she could see or ruptured that she was just in shock and that the best thing to do would be to set her free i honestly thought she'd be put to sleep i said i could put her in a stable overnight but vet said really just to let her go. by the time we got to where i'd hit her she was geting livelier, i carried her into the stubble field quite far up next to some trees and let her go she got up fell over a few times but then ran away so i can only hope she might be ok but guess will never know, really hope i did the right thing i'm really upset, can you guys please send the wee deer some vibes that she'll be safe

I have nearly hit one so many times going to and from our yard

I would more than likely kill it though as I have a Disco. I am sure it will be fine. You are SO brave picking it up, there is no way I could of done that. A cat ran under the back wheels of my car a few months ago and I obviously stopped but couldn't go near it, it was dead

I flagged a bloke down in a car and asked him to move the cat and get the number off its collar so I could ring the owner. Its awful when it happens, makes you feel so bad.

I am sure the little deer will be fine and hopefully learnt a lesson!!

She'll be fine. You did the right thing letting her go once the vet had checked her. They get very stressed inside.

Over here they'd have taken her home and eaten her

oh dear (no pun intended) that was really kind of you to take it to vets and hope that it will be ok, bless you!

my sis in law hit one and it took out the front end of her new corsa lights bonnet the lot...the deer was killed instantley shame!!

they do just appear from no where though i had a very very close call a few months back with a whole herd of them running across the road in the dark....luckily brakes were very quickly applied and stopped very close to them it was a huge shock for me and OH!!

Had a wild boar run acoss the road in front of the car the other night. We have an Isuzu Troper with bull bars and, I am not kidding, this thing was as long as the car is wide - with some evil tusks. Glad we didn't hit it, although it won't last long round these parts.

Crikey, you were lucky you didn't hit it hard. You could have done yourself some serious damage.

A whitetail buck (talking about the size of a red deer here) jumped out infront of our truck, and bent it big style. Lights, radiator, fender, hood, windshield and some important bits underneath as well.

OH came home and after checking he was OK, I asked if he had bought the deer (very dead) home. "I tried" he said"but it was like trying to lift a shetland pony" we went back but someone had already picked it up. that would have filled my freezer for the winter.

I don't wish anything dead in that manner, but if it is fresh then I have no objection to eating it. He always carries a hunting knife now, no, not to do roadside butchery, but to dispatch an injured animal if he had to, he did wonder how he would have finished off an injured deer as he had nothing in the truck.

This was a little young female roe deer she was pretty heavy, maybe about the size of my friends rodesian ridgeback (sp) dog or a wee bit bigger. i know i just didnt know what to do its not nice the vet said at this time of yr they usually get 1 a week taken to them.
Not so long ago i was out on training learning a new round (i'm a postie) and me and Jackie seen a deer lying down we got out van to get a better look and the deer stood up and i was shocked his 2 hind legs were literally snapped in half, the bottoms of them hanging on by skin and he was walking on the stumps he ran into the woods but i was very determind to catch him we caught him (again i was in bits) we put him in back of van with help from a policeman who lived nearby this dear was a boy and a bit heavier and we took him to the vets he was pts.
i was just amazed at how this little deer could have lived on with such a massive injury (they were not new wounds) it must be that the survival instinct is so strong i have a lot of respect or them. its so sad that so many of them are killed on the roads but i guess its just a horrible part of life

Well done for helping the deer. Hope she gets better soon.

Just out of interest, when you take something that's not yours (i.e. wild or a stray cat/dog) to the vets, do you have to pay for it yourself?? Or does the vet do it for free or try and find the owner (if dog/cat obviously)??

You did totally the right thing hunny and many people would not have gone to the trouble you went to. I'm sure that the deer will be absoulutely fine, big hugs xx
