Upright with filler and we soared over it....woohoo. Sorry for the boring post but just had to tell someone - kids and the other half are watching Britains Got Talent!

Regularly jump up to 1m05 but 1m20 looked much much bigger so hadnt really gone for it. Have a bit more confidence now.

Very happy

well done! it gives you so much confidence when you just go for a big fence like that! it also makes everything look much smaller- huge confidence booster!!

Agree 100% - felt like I had won a class at HOYS when I did it.

But how do I work up to this level now? I guess continue as I have been in moving slowly up to 1m05. Grids, poles, one off fences and courses. Anything else I should be doing?

My horse is more than capable - he has jumped rounds of 1m30 plus with his previous owner - its me than lacks the experience, I returned to riding about 1.5 years ago after a 20 year break. And then it was only ponies so a great deal different. His previous owner is my trainer so its helpful having that link.

Anyway long and boring response but still chuffed....

you sound like me- very capable horse, unexperienced rider at jumping that height who is capable just not used to it!
im jumping 1.10m courses at the moment, with scope to go further. but i dont want to go too wuickly and knock our confidence. i just take it 5cm by 5cm. practice lots at home- and keep competing at 10.5m until you really comfortable at that height, then move up. but practice at home as if you weere at a competition. lots of grids etc etc. etc.
good luck

Yep good comments - am not gunna let it go my head (well not too much!!!) will be back to good old practice rounds and grids later this week.

Dont feel like I have really nailed the 1m05 rounds yet so will stay at this height for while to come I think. I dont want to get too big as I am still a little hit and miss with my striding although when I ride as if I am in a jump off I am much better! My Mum who watches me all the time suggests its coz I have less time to think and mess about with the striding and my riding is more assertive.

I stuck at 1m/1.05 for a while and had to get myself quite agitated to go onto Newcomers and 1.15. Getting out and jumping most weeks and remembering to ride forwards were the key.

Its easy to blame the horse - mine had never jumped that height before so at least you can have the confidence that yours had. The funny thing is, my horse jumps much better over a bigger course than 1.05, she seems to find it more interesting. Perhaps its because she's more forwards going now.

I've always thought a Chase-Me_Charlie or a Puissance would be a good way of bulding up to a bigger course, but unfortunatley for me, there are none at any of the shows round here.

Its Foxhunter next for us, but not for a few weeks yet. Eeek!

Well done. I'd raise the jumps very gradually 5cms at a time until you're comfortable and ready to move on. You can also put the bigger fences at the end of an easy combination so you get used to the height without stressing about seeing the distance (this tends to stress me out, at least!)

Well done! I remember the first time I cantered up to a 1m20. I was willing ponio not to stop and squeezing for britain, and preparing myself to die!! I was plesantly surprised when realised it actually feels better than a 3ft one

Not sure I would do it now tho, the nerves might kill me

Thanks everyone - really good idea about putting the bigger jump at the end of a combination to build my confidence. My boy certainly jumps better and enjoys a bigger course. It just felt really good flying over the jump and for sure it felt better than a smaller one. Need to work on the mare tomorrow - xpoles with her at the moment but she has tons and tons of scope.
