Ok so not that big a deal to many people but i am terrified of jumping and only ever do it when my instructor is there to make me. Why do i jump i here you ask..... Well for 2 reasons firstly I hate being scared of anything so i keep trying to face my fear and secondly because my horse loves it so much i like to give him a treat.

It was a lovely day so i thought why not, I put out 4 trotting poles and in another part of the school a 2ft cross pole. With no instructor to push me I decided to go it alone and i actually enjoyed it. He trotted the poles like they were going to bite him, refusing to touch any of them and he jumped the jump really nicely in both directions quite a few times.

I only jump from trot because he gets a bit forward in canter and i then panic and hold him which he doesn’t like, but i am getting better.

Pointless post really just wanted to share my achievement with people who understand my fear.:D :D

Thats fab, well done you.

I know what its like to face your fears, but how good does it feel afterwards

The best!!!

The only problem is i have to face it every time i jump and it doesn’t get any better. Oh well, i will keep trying and one day i wont feel sick while jumping!

Is jumping your fear or is it something else?

Is jumping your fear or is it something else?

Nope, I love jumping. Thats what I do with my horses.

I had to face my fear when Archie threw me off and I landed on my head and was petrified of ever getting back on him again!!
It took a long time to get my confidence back and probably took a good year before I stopped feeling sick at the thought of just getting on him!!

I would say to you, that dont worry about your jumping getting better, just stay at a level/height you are comfortable with and just work on getting your confidence, the rest will come.
Good luck with it all and keep us posted.

Yay! I am totally scared of jumping....but we do it all the time!!!!! I'm like you, I just hate it when I'm scared of something so I make myself do it.

The feeling you get when you do it is AWESOME!!! I am getting much better, I love sponsored rides since at the beginning you're scared to do a 2 foot jump but as the adrenaline gets pumping you end up jumping bigger and bigger. Last time we did a couple of 3 foot xc jumps :D

Keep at it!

Thank you for your supportive words. I mainly do dressage but if i jump him his flatwork really improves so i do it as a means to an end.

I was having regular jumping lessons (2 a week) about 2 years ago and we really started to get somewhere in 3 months I had gone from a trotting pole on the floor to cantering a course of 1m. I entered my first working hunter, the jumps were 2ft9 and we had one stop (well i pulled him up because i didn’t like the jump) then we cleared the rest of the course we got 2nd and the judge asked me to go into the next class because the stop was my fault so feeling far to confident i entered the next class which was only 2 holes higher and i miss jumped the 2nd fence and came off above the jump. I pulled a muscle in my hip but managed to get back on and jump a practice jump (the judge insisted). I then had a month off with my hip and have never got my confidence back.

I am not very good at jumping and have had some bad falls whilst trying to master the art. I try and jump the jump for the horse and throw myself to far forward.

I need to jump more often so that both the horse and I find it boring to jump. My horse is a very talented jumper and at 18hh finds most heights very easy. He knows his job but likes to come in a bit quick which scares me, he will never stop but if i come off it is normally because he looses me.

I will keep you posted and hopefully i will get back to where i was 2 years ago.

I too had a bad fall off Monty and it came about by someone at a show making me jump a class I wasn't ready for!

Half my problem is that I think I'm rubbish! I just can't relax and go with the horse. I care too much about what people looking will think. However, slowly slowly catchy monkey! You WILL get there. I find the best thing is to do something every time I jump that is a bit scary, but not so scary that I'm literally terrified. I'm lucky since my Zoom is a one-eyed polo pony that had never jumped. We have learned together and she is so honest!

I am REALLY looking forward to hearing your progress. There are so many people like you and me. You WILL get there!

I know exactly where you are comming from, I feel sick when I jump and if the horse rushes I completely panic, not a good response. My friend entered me into a 2 foot jumping competition a while back on a pony she knew I trusted, told me I'd be grooming for her in the 3ft6 and told me to dress smart and bring my hat as she might ask me to warm up her horse on the flat. I got there and was presented with nikita (a darling) and told to jump. I threw up afterwards but I got clear, the only bad bit of that was having to go into the 2ft3 jump off. It was terrifying but Nikita carried me like a pro and I actualy got a complement off the judge after my ride.

Well done for facing your fear, I can't tell you if it will get less scary but I have to admit under the terror, it was kinda fun and I felt really good afterwards.
