Vet and farrier has said horse has laminitis
They are equine vets with years of experience and farrier is a VERY good farrier and knows his job so why doesn't owner believe any of them and refuses to treat as such.Horse is in obvious pain and discomfort on front feet and has been on box rest since vet visited 3 months ago

Farrier still thinks its laminitis but owner won't get vet, they are getting a back man out................and feeds horse as normal no bute etc
I just don't understand why refuse to believe or even if you didn't you would be trying to do other bloody things to stop pony being in pain along with your vet.
I know vets get things wrong but horse aint getting better so would it hurt to follow treatment for laminitis and at least see if that worked. Why are folk so bloody pig headed!!!!!!!!!!

I really dislike people like that too! There is a pony on our yard who is lamanitic too and although the owner is treating it she is still feeding it jam sandwiches and cake etc - yet wonders why it is getting worse and fatter?!?!
Sooo fustrating when there is nothing you can do as its not your horse or your yard

Have they explained what they do think is going on? Do they not know what laminitis is? Do they think it's something too expensive to bother treating?

There's no accounting for some people, but surely they have some sort of 'logic' behind their reasoning, even if it's not logic as we'd recognise it

because 'THEY KNOW BEST'

Farrier, will be able to see the damage to the laminae by now, so if farrier says laminitis, it is likly that it is.

Ignorence is the biggest killer in this world aint it hun?

things like this really really bug the hell out of me....as my boy had lami and I was a good owner to him so why on earth doesnt the owner listen to the experts and do what is right for said pony...they will kill it with there ignorance maybe a chat with vet and farrier to explain the lami to owners may help...surely they love this pony and would do whats right so why ignore such info? makes me really mad as pony will now be suffering due to their ignorance if thats what you call it? I dinno just makes me annoyed as you can tell.....
sorry

do sympathise, last yard I was on there was a lady with an obviously pregnant mare. She wouldnt get the vet and was reassured by a dog breeder friend of her husbands and the yard 'expert'that it wasnt pregnant. She kept working the poor mare and cutting its feed to make it lose weight! You could actually see the foal moving! She only accepted it was pregnant when the yard owner ordered a preganncy test kit over the internet and guess what the results were positive! When it foaled she wouldnt get the vet out so the poor mare got peritonities from retained afterbirth - result vet was there all night long. The poor foal was later sold four to five months after birth....

Both farrier and vet have talked to owner without any joy(and farrier isn't shy about saying what he thinks)brick wall and head was mentioned!
Owners do love horse, moneys not a problem .I just can't understand why the unwillingness to take on board what people who have years of training and experience have diagnosed and to avoid getting vet altogether to discuss is madness all at at the horses expense.Even if I didn't agree with vets I would prob follow treatment advised and then research on here books, internet etc and discuss with vet but I would be making bloody sure horse did have some form of pain relief regardless of what I agreed/disagreed with.

Call a welfare organisation please. It is an offence to not provide veterinary treatment when it is needed.

Laminitis is agonising, I've heard it described as like an infection under your fingernail - only your nail is not joined all the way round so the infection has somewhere to escape - horses are not so lucky. It is terrible to think of a horse being left untreated.

PLEASE make the call, they will let you report anonymously if you are worried!

The WHW welfare line is 08000 480180
RSPCA is 0300 1234 999

then they are willigly letting pony suffer to me that is neglect...poor pony will be in huge amounts of pain, i would involve a charity as pony will die eventually from the pure ignorance it's unfair on the poor lad...grrrrr this has really made my blood boil....i fought long and hard to save my boy's life with little wages coming in and huge bill at end but would do anything to have him back.....perhaps the truth hurts them and dont want to deal with this if so they should sell or give pony to someone with the right attitude as they clearly havent got!!

i'm really upset by this now to the extent of crying about said pony....lami can be treated very well!!!

PLEASE call a charity/welfare organisation - this is needed as owner is blatently ignorant to the poor's welfare...

Please don't cry.I feel bad about posting now but needed to vent!!
I know . Think if it had been treated at beginning horse would now be out in field happy but now at best is left with chronic laminitis at worst well ..................

Think I may speak to vets/yo as use the same ones.Know they can't divulge any info but there are ways.........................Will also talk to yo as he doesn't like it when welfare orginisations are involved. He treats all his animals with respect

please please call a welfare place you can do it annoyismly (sp) but like it has been said before pony needs treatment and they are neglecting this fact so are making the poor little bugger suffer = NEGLECT!!
Oh no I'm such a softie when it comes to animals anyway but having had merlin with laminitis I did everything in my power to keep him well, he didint die from lami either...that was soo very well controlled but know how it is for them....
owner should be ashamed!

My horse had lami a few years back, I followed vet and farrier's advice to the letter, he is 30 now and wears a muzzle ALL the time when turned out, it has taken some customisation I might add ! so he keeps it on ha ha

In the winter I might let him have an hour without it but am terrified of him getting it again, the pain is terrible and he had it mildly.

This pony needs help and unfortunately you seem to be the person who can...... you must do whats right, I hate to hear of an animal in pain

I appreciate your yo's point of view, but this horse has been suffering for 3 months - he should have spoken to the owner already as clearly this reflects badly on his yard. If he will not take effective action then a welfare organisation needs to become involved, and too bad for him.

Action needs to be taken for this horse. Goodness knows whether or not it will be saveable after so long without proper treatment.

Successful prosecutions have been brought against owners who did not seek proper veterinary advice when it was needed. This is potentially very serious indeed.

Sorry didn't put that across very well.Actually meant will talk to YO(farmer) BECAUSE he doesn't like it if welfare org get involved as he sees this a reflection on him so is more likely to do something. plus he isn't a bad person and wouldn't see an animal suffer. It is very much a DIY yard and tbh YO is propably not aware of situation.

In that case I would make him aware and explain that you hope something can be done but if not you think that both of you should jointly call WHW and seek their advice on the owner. I'm guessing he will be more comfortable with a species specific charity that does not take its own prosecutions forward.

That way he will feel that he has some control over the whole process and that he is being proactive in making that call himself. WHW will be able to support him as well as speak to the owner, so he will be on their side from the outset, if you see what I mean.

That is how I would approach this situation anyway.

Kezz don't think you are being a softie.
Animals in pain when tbh it is/was probably avoidable to an extent.
Will let you know how it turns out.
Wish I would just go to owner and tell her to get f'n vet or will report to welfare!!!
Need to check few things first tho................

yes please do let us know i'll keep my fingers crossed that something happens for the good of the horse.
well done you also for raising this...your a good person.
hope your YO wil be able to chat to welfare people too for not only his reputation but the ponies welfare

I was just reading through these posts and was hoping someone would suggest this before I did (i suffer from the fear of being shot down in flames

)

Good luck, it's good to know some people care.

OMG that is so sad the poor horse. My boy has recently had lammi and it was horrendous to see him in so much pain. People who allow their animals to suffer should not be allowed anywhere near them its criminal.

Coming to this a bit late but as others have said please call WHW or similar about this horse. As I understand it the YO is responsible for horses on his yard so perhaps if you point this out to him he will contact them himself. Please let us know how the horse goes on.
