should you travel a single horse in a trailer?

I have just followed one home and the very big (in Hands) horse was being travelled on the NS .... I thought it was correct for balance to travel on the OS?

Would there be any reason to travel a singe horse on the NS or would it be that they had got it wrong

the rule of thumb is usually Offside, to balance against camber, etc. I do know of horses that appear to be more comfortable on the NS, you just have to be more careful with bends.

Thanks Mother_hen ... I must admit he did look very happy and relaxed, so it must have been that then

The driver seemed to be a very careful driver, for the time I was following

Is the offside same as offside as in the horse? Right hand side walking into the trailer? I think i travelled my daughters pony in the wrong saide last week.

Yes ... nearest the middle of the road

EDT But as Mother-Hen said it may depend on the horse ... and TBO a pony might not cause too many balance problems

Mind you I suppose if you were travelling a bigun and littleun then the biggun should be on the OS

Thankyou. I will change my ways. Have been a lorry driver for years. Have taken back to trailers well but never knew this.

Merlin travels like an idiot on the right

have taken out partition and he is fine, but I would like to travel 2 horses occasionally. So might try him on the left.

Have been told its legal and ok to do it, but right is correct

It's because of the camber on British roads that it is safer to travel a single horse on the right, in order to balance the trailer better, although in theory the weight should be evenly distributed over the axles anyway. However, some horses do travel better on the left, in which case it is okay to put them there, but you need to be even more careful than normal with cornering etc, and some horses travel best with no partition, when they tend to put themselves cross-ways in the trailer.
