In our pony club you are not allowed to go SJ or XC without your body protector even for clinics.
I only wear mine for SJ and XC now but thats due to me having taken some nasty tumbles whilst jumping due to horse being green (could probably get away with not wearing one now as he's much better) but still my mum and dad feel happier if I wear it and so do I knowing that I am offered more protection by wearing it than not
Also I had a nasty riding accident whilst put on a hack in October 2007 when my horse flipped and landed on me and I had to be air lifted to hospital. I remember thinking before we left the yard that morning for our ride that I couldn't be bothered to wear my BP as it meant taking my coat off and putting it back on again. However, I did and am so glad I chose to! After the fall the paramedics were worried I might have serious head injuries but luckily I didn't as I wore my hat but they were also worried about cracked ribs etc. I do have musculo-skeletal problems in my ribs now which can make breathing extremely painful when I put myself under a lot of strain (e.g. lifting lots of heavy things) but I consider myself lucky seeing as It could have been SOOO MUCH WORSE had I not been wearing my BP!!
So that is my reason for wearing mine and why I encourage other people to wear theirs. Like many people, I thought I knew my horse pretty well and it wasn't really his fault it was just slippery undefoot
It's the same when I see people riding without hats
They always give the excuse 'I know my horse well and s/he won't do anything' well you won't be saying that if something were to go wrong and you were left with serious damage to your brain which could have been prevented if you had taken literally seconds to place your hat on your head and fasten it up before getting on...
It doesn't make you cool or uncool wearing either a hat or a body protector and they aren't fashion, they are just there to protect you...and ok, so it may not look as smart wearing a BP over or under a competition jacket at shows but it's worth it if it will help keep damage to you, should anything happen, to a minimum especially as many horse get very exciteable in a show environment.
Sorry rant over!
just a subject I feel pretty strongly about seeing as I have had experience of how they can really help you and prevent things from being much worse!
I'm not saying you have to, that's a decision for you to make yourself but this is just why I think you should and I hope that even if it means one person thinks twice about wearing their hat or body protector then it has been worth it
Hot chocolate and cookies (sorry i'm not quite ols enough to open the wine!
) if you managed to hang on through my ramblings!
