My old man is currently on one bute a day because he's slightly stiff, and has been for about 18months, I'm thinking that he doesn't actually get much bute as I have to mix it a syringe it in and he has improved an awful lot in that time as awell, therefore I would like to change from bute to try one of the other "non perscription" type subsitiues, which I think may be kinder on his system (not that he's showing any side effects from the bute)

I'm aware there are many products out there, (it's a complete minefield when you start to look!!!)

Does any one have any recommendations on which would be the best one to try

try topspec 10:10...

its pretty good stuff.

i personally wouldnt give Bute on a long term daily basis, instead prefering to use Danilon.

I have tried devils relief but only minimally. I have heard it is very successful and people I know who have used it have found it effective.

He probably gets more than you think. But if he won't eat it in his feed, have you thought about Danillon instead? It's very palatable and kinder to their system.

What about devils claw, depending on how serious his stiffness is. Made a big difference to our old boys old achy artharitus joints!

Danillon is what my pony is on (short term 2 weeks) atm, she doesn't get much feed at all so was worried about her sniffing it out and not eating food but she gobbled it down as usual!

I have thought about Danilon but when I went to vets last week was surprise at how expensive it is and also how expensive the bute has gone to - use to be about 60p a sachet and now upto 84p!!! (rather a big jump over 100days from when I bought my last box!!!)
Danilon is in the order of 94p a sachet

So they are starting to get quite expensive and I'm wonder on a long term dosage if there is something that is just as effective but cheaper on the non perscription side

Lillro1 - the devils claw that you used is it called devils claw in the shop or does it have another name?

I think your vet is charging a lot for danilon. I get a box of 60 for a lot less than that (can't remember the amount off the top of my head but am thinking £38)

I have tried loads and loads of products, no bute was no good, joint aid and joint aid plus no good, naf 5 star superflex no good. Have been on Buteless for 2 months now and I think its made a difference. Its the best so far anyway. Its £19.99 for 2 months supply.

Green lipped mussell - (like maxativa's pernamax) you can buy it from Holland and Barratts much cheaper - works out about £11 a month...give about 4-5 capsules a day in his food, you can break the capsules open and he wont even know its there.

Just don't tell em you're giving it to your horse......

I use Buteless for my mare in the winter in her feeds, I also give her Glucosamine, (equine america, the tubs with the green lids, do a cheap good quality one) all year round and she is a much younger moving horse than before I put her on it. She's 29 and arteritic behind, still jumping little fences up to about 2'3 and still out for mad gallopy hacks and long summer picnic rides!!

Thanks for all your answers - I'm thinking I might try buteless but one other problem is he's an extremely fussy eater - has anyone had any problems putting buteless in their food?

my old man has a bute jam sandwich every other day, works fab, his fav is strawberry jam
