my farrier showed me how to do it all in the right ways

he was so paitent and it was really good to learn how to do it!
but my god is it difficult! firstly he told me to pick up the leg, fine, put it between my legs, ok a bit weird as you have to get right under the horse, and then hold it with your knees- pain! well not too bad really and then point your toes in!?! confusing!! i then had to hit the clenches and then pull the shoe off, was really hard! but it was really good to learn

so thank you to my farrier!

Its a good thing to have learnt - my old farrier taught me as my friends old TB was forever pulling his shoes off - only sometimes didn't make a great job of it so at least it meant we could get them off and make sure he didn't do any damage while the farrier got back to him.

Well done - not easy is it?!

Where you went wrong was gripping with you knee, use the thight muscle.. much less pain and you knock the 'clenches' up.

But Im glad youve learnt how to do it, Removing a shoe is something everone should learn!

yep, not easy at all. fwiw there is a special tool which pulls out one nail at a time from underneath, which farriers don't usually bother with but it's a godsend for the girls among us (no, fortunately i do not have muscles like Arnie, i need a bit of help!), if you do this it is much easier to remove a shoe!

ah ker, if the horse has a weak hoof wall and the clench is not up, and you use the nail pullers you are liable to pull a chunk of wall off too.. But yes they are a good tool. But its a tool which is more commonly used when nailing up and the nail is in the wrong position.

ahh... well my dad did a farrier course in the army so has the tools for taking off a shoe.. maybe i should get gim to get me one of those! it is really hard standing like that!
it was coz i was talkign abuot how once i had tried to get a shoe of my old pony as it was digging into his foot.. i think i spent about 30 misn trying!!!!

such a good thing to know how to do!

We nip the clenches off and knock the nails back down with a buffer, tap the shoe up and then remove the nails with a long handled pair of curved ended plier thingies. Fortunately OH did a course and was taught how to stand and bend in order to minimise back ache as much as possible. I think you point your toes in to make a tripod effect, it turns your knees in and means your thighs can support the weight of the foot better.

our year (and all subsequent years) on my vet course got taken to the DAC for equine teaching etc, and the farriers were those who taught us how to remove a shoe etc! I would like to go back to repeat how to do it, as its a little fuzzy!
