Someone has a measuring stick at the yard so I thought I would see how big he is now he is 4 months old. After Hannah had a complete panic attack at the scary stick (we think she might have been beaten with something similar at some point because she just started shaking very violently) Troy stood completely still and I put the stick up to him.

At his withers he measures just over 13.2hh, and his bottom is a whopping 14.1hh

Does anyone know whether there is a way to convert heights as 4 months, 5 months and 6 months old foals into adult heights???

Well going on the foals that we have at the yard - (although only one this year) I recon you are looking at around the 16.3-17hh mark.

He certainly aint gonna be any smaller than 16.2hh that's for sure.

Only 16.1hh and a lot of his off spring are coming up quite small (16hh, 16.1hh...)

Oh, ok - may be way out then......

They all grow at different rates so going by height at a certain age is not a good idea, especially as it differs from mare to mare how well she's doing her foal.

Best thing to do is take a piece of string from the bulb of the heel to the elbow, double that figure and measure from the the bulb of the heel to the ground, add that on to the figure you've doubled and hey presto!

He sounds like he's going to be a big boy! How is he now? All fully recovered from traumas?

Your blog was invaluable to us, as our mare was foaling a couple of months after Hanna, and it was her first (and ours!) So I followed Hanna's progress daily, and I think that unfortunately Beth did as well - she certainly made us wait!

We now have a lovely foal who is giving us a bit of a scare at the moment, as he has a very snotty nose, but vet thinks its almost certainly the weather and typical foal snots - so we hope so. He's 8 weeks, and having been enormous at birth was already measuring over 12hh at 7 weeks, so we'll be swopping notes on foal height!! Very useful guide on how to estimate adult height - I'll get busy with my piece of string!

What age do you do the string test?? As if done noe isn't Troy going to be a giant!!!????
