Out hacking today I met a complete numpty driving a U-drive 7.5ton lorry. It must have been some of the worst lorry driving I have seen in a long time and it was quite obvious that he had either never driven a lorry before or had very minimal experience in one! He treated it like he was driving a car and it would have been a very possible manoeuvre in a car but not in a lorry!!!

Now, most things don't upset my two out hacking, and even ride and lead I trust them to behave and listen to what I ask....but this guy really tested them and we did end up cantering down the road due to his stupidity! We had a bus coming towards us so the lorry driver decided to try and race past and beat the bus! Que lorry engine revving madly and ducking out to other side of road from very close behind us....then having to slam on breaks RIGHT NEXT to us as he realised he couldn't make it passed before the bus came down! Then he swung back behind us and I have no idea how he didn't hit my horses! At this point we just took up off the road..... Not very far and everyone else stopped till we were all safe again!

i am just very p***ed at myself for not getting their number plate as I think they deserved reporting! Is it worth writing to U-drive about this? As could they tell who was driving through a tracker in the vehicle?

TBH, without the number-plate I doubt if you've much chance of getting anything done. There is little that the hire company can do. If you feel very strongly, I can understand if you do, report the incident tot he police. They may be moved to track the driver down through the horse company and the bus driver may be prepared to support your story.

I'm so glad that you both survived the experience.

Glad you are ok :) glad it was not me :)

I had a carriage driving lesson [my third or fourth], we went out on quiet main road, very steady ponies, a huge forestry lorry was coming towards us, he slowed down, cue a car behind him overtaking and speeding towards us!
My instructor missed this as she was checking our tied pony trotting behind, so was rather surprised when I started driving on the the grass verge, it all happened quite slowly but with a young pony it might have been a lot more dramatic.
