I must be mad! Did something very scary today!

Well scary for me anyway but I couldn't be more proud of my girl. I got my ex racer in march and let's just say she's not the best to hack alone! I've only previously tried to hack completely alone once which wasn't great, she just went into complete panic mode so I had to dismount and lead her home for her to chill out, needless to say I haven't tried again since partly due to nerves and I knew I had to go back to basics with her to build her confidence.

Ever since I've been taking her out for in hand hacks where she has become more and more comfortable leaving the yard. So today in the pouring rain I thought it would be the perfect time to try hacking alone again ;) I really don't like to do things the easy way! Haha. So all wrapped and hi vised up I took her out in hand, once she was chilled I hopped on and rode her all the way home!! She was foot perfect, forward going, responsive but confident and the best she's ever felt, even good with the traffic which she can be a little twitchy with. Couldn't be prouder of her and just need to build up the time I spend on her rather than leading her!

Sorry for the self indulgent post, but very happy as its a big deal for us! :)

It really is! I've read some of your threads about your Ned being a bit difficult to leave the yard and the progress you have been making so well done to you too! :)
 
good for you, real feeling of achievement isn't it. No biggie to some but racehorses don't go out alone when in training so they have to learn to do it. i did the exact same thing as you did. I takes time but it is fab when you can ride on the way out too without having to get off and lead for a little bit.

Yes exactly and you can't get angry at them as all they've ever known is a group environment. That's what I'm aiming for, a whole hack with no leading. I know heading out from the yard will be trickiest especially when her field mate calls for her but I know we'll get there! :)

you're probably right there - mine is ok on his own once we're out, and will happily leave another horse to come home on his own, but can still be quite sticky to actually leave the yard alone :rolleyes: (sometimes have to be escorted off the premises by a responsible adult, lol!).

Haha that's where the problem lies, she will leave the yard fine, but as soon as her friend calls its like she panics and realises she's all alone! If she's on the way back and he calls she doesn't care, like she's thinking 'I'm nearly home anyway so I don't care if you call, I'll be there in a minute' kind of attitude :)

The difference in her attitude and confidence is amazing, little baby steps are definitely the way forward! :)
