To think that someone would like a share horse, but with not having to pay for it!
I still cant find anyone that would like to ride out my sons horse.
Maybe its the fact that my son hunts every weekend,so riding would have to be during the week.Maybe its the weather,or im advertising in the wrong places.
Cant give the poor boy away!!!

Cant believe your still looking for someone i wish i was closer as i said before have you tried all the usuals?? Hope you find someone soon....

Maybe people are put off because they think he might be super fit and too much for them or something? I'd jump at the chance though, something different to ride with no costs and free weekends, yes please! haha

Why should you expect someone to ride your sons horse out for nothing, if you can afford to hunt each weekend, get and pay for a groom FGS.

I was thinking that maybe someone who cant afford their own horse,or cant afford lessons would jump at the chance for free riding, must be wrong???

No you are not wrong at all (and IMO Pastie's reply was uncalled for - nothing new there then!)

When I went back to Uni to do my Postgrad I had the same trouble. I wasn't even bothered about weekends and was happy to do all the work. Couldn't find anyone despite the horse being very safe and easy to ride!

I would have jumped at the chance to have a horse like that to ride; I used to be pleased with the nutters I used to ride for people.

:)

Quite wrong, this is the real world. Why should a young person keep your sons horse fit for him for nothing. Would you offer a day or two hunting for this unpaid rider, I find your post rather conderscending to be honest. No doubt you would want a good rider for this horse. Nothing in this day and age is free, and why should it be. Put your hand in your pocket and pay someone.

Actually the horse in question you could put a novice on,and if someone wnated to hunt him occasionally during the week, and use my trailer i wouldnt see a problem with it.
You have got me all wrong Patsie!!!:)

Sorry hunting mad! You didnt state those facts in your original post. You seemed to want an unpaid rider, I suggest you put those options in you advertisement, then you might get some takers.

Sounds like a good arrangement to me, lots of sharers have to contribute. Prob the weather and time of year putting people off, or that people think he's too fit being a hunter.

I do sympathise with the OP.
I have a lovely 15.1 mare who hacks beautifully, but have only had 2 responses for anyone to have basically have free riding 3 days a week (again - is it the weekend thing? - I thought she'd be right up someones street who might have children at school etc). It would have done the mare good to get out on the 3 days I'm tied to the office during daylight hours. I do all the yard stuff at either end of the day too, so not a 'free groom' - but just the kindness of a person to carry on hacking her like I do.
Like you - no costs involved - the only 'payback' would be later in the spring/summer next year in looking after her 1 weekend in every month when I am away - while she is out 24/7 - and be able to ride then too. (and by then, we would know each other reasonably well enough to have that trust in someone else looking after my little horse)
Am not bothered at present tho - with the way the weather is - I'll wait till new year now as we've stopped riding till the ground soften's a bit....

1 call was from a 13 yr old who thought it would be "okay to ride after school - is 5pm ok?" (advert clearly said adult).
The 2nd call from someone asking if I would loan the mare out to her instead.....
I had to explain to both that this was not quite what I was looking for :)

What nonsense! why should people get free riding? It costs in excess of £25 to ride for an hour at a school, why should anyone be paid to do this unless they are schooling and briniging on a horse AND trained ie BHSAI

I recently advertised my horse for share at no cost to the person sharing and they didn't have to do any work if they didn't want to. I had one person interested, but she wanted a full loan and wanted to take him to another yard, which I didn't want to do. Before I had my own horses, I would have jumped at the chance to be able to ride for free, but it seems that there isn't that much interest any more. I even offered a sharer the opportunity to compete him. I think when mine have passed on, I won't buy another, I'll just put my services out there and not have the cost involved!

Thanks!!!I probably should have said this in the beginning.
Have put this in my adverts as well.
I cant afford to pay someone, but i though a free horse,a bit of hunting, shows in the summer, use of a trailer and some nice hacking may have tempted someone.Would have been some company for me as well!

Me too, I have two horses and needed someone to ride with me, I was happy to take us to the beach and hunting - all foc, I have nobody call me, I advertised for two weeks in the local paper :(

Thank God somone has some sense... I feel all the people who I let ride my horse should be paying me! I do all the work, pay all the bills, and have the vet responsibility. The riding is the fun part as far as I am concerned. She is not talking about training the horse after all and the offer sounds more than generous for a person who will prob not have a horse of their own. It will be keeping their skills sharp and making them fit too I assume so it is a give and take. It just takes the right and appreciative person to come along.
I am sure there are people who would bite her hand off if it was summer. I imagine it is the weather and the holidays and I would wait a bit and be patient.
