I apologise now for this outburst. I kind of feel I shouldn't be ranting away as I'm a fairly new member and probably don't have the right to rant but I have to.

Here's the outline.

Friend at uni (lets call him D) is struggling with money.
Yes, he's at uni. He's doing a full time degree. He doesn't drive.
Instead of getting a 'normal' job he goes into 'business' with a guy (it could be his boyfriend but we're not sure).
The pair have bought 'a pony' and they're going to pick 'it' up tomorrow.
(He keeps calling her 'it' which gets on my nerves a little.)
He says that this is going to be a good source of money.
He is planning to do something with her and sell on as far as I can tell.
They bought her 'very very cheap' apparently. She's not been vetted and could be in foal.

I'm a horsey girl. Been around horse pretty much all my life. I'm frankly disgusted. He says he plans to get back into riding and his business parter used to be a 'professional show jumper, rider, trainer and breaker' for years. Been off the sceen for a while though.

I asked her if he plans to breed as I would have told him there and then that I do not approve of breeding unnecessarily from a horse he only knows the age of. He said he isn't.

As I'm typing this he he typing more. The woman they're buying from refuses to have the horse vetted.

I've told him to stay away as it doesn't sound good but it's falling on deaf ears.

Maybe I'm jealous because I want a horse. But I'm sensible. I ride once a week at the mo, that'll do me.

He doesn't have a car, he's apparently looking after her most of the time.

I've said to shout if he needs a hand but... I know he won't.

I'm really sorry to rant. I just think he's being an idiot and I really feel for the poor mare. I hope they know what they're doing.

I'll be off now.

Ben & Jerry's if you get this far. xx

Unfortunately there are a lot of irresponsible people around. I had a friend who I really looked up to but I decided in the end she was just a horse collector - moving from one horse to another without any consideration for the other horses.

I understand a couple of people reported her in the end. Lets just hope good will come from what they are up to in one form or another

I just think they're being idiots.

It turns out the business partner is his new boyfriend.

I'm tempted to say his BF is just using him for his money but that's harsh. Although can't help but think it.

Off to get the bus home from work now. Back in half an hour. Will try not to rant anymore. Sorry.

DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON STUPID PEOPLE!!

I know someone who knows 0 about horses, bought a pony for her kids, it ended up going back the next day as it was lame!

Now i find out that shes bought a 2 and half year old 12.2hh welsh c, that she asked me when she can use leadropes on it!?!?!

She then told me today shes had a go at lunging it! Im surprised she even knew the word! Shes a nob!

it annoys me when people wont listen.... as soon as she says its all gone worng again... im going to point and say told you so!! As i can as i specifically said do not buy a youngster for your kids to groom!!

I know what you are saying about deaf ears... I'm in a similar predictament with a friend of mine... who has been into horses longer then me!! Just feel like you're wasting your breath hey!!

My fella has just actually bought me some Ben & Jerry's in!! So thank you, I'll take you up on that ha ha xx

I'm not surprised you are annoyed. The horse will be the one to suffer in all this, poor horse!

Perhaps you should type that the horse market is extremely slow at the moment, and that many people cannot afford to buy, let alone keep horses. Also stress that at this time of the year it is extremely difficult to turn horses round for a profit.

This is a very sad situation, I really hope that they give up on this idea

Have tried. I can't see what profuit they're going to make.

Apparently, they just spent over £200 in Bath and on Ebay on horsey equipment.
Apparently, some of D's boyfriends 'contacts' are interested and willing to pay £600-900 more than what they're buying her tomorrow. But surely that £600-900 will pay back the £200 they just spent on equipment, £70 on horsebox hire, plus the stabling, feed, bedding etc etc etc costs they've paid and will be paying out. That says to me, no profit.

D is in his second year at uni. Why can't he just get a 'normal' job.

I hate jealously as well but I am jealous because I do really want a horse. But even when I leave uni, I will look to share/loan first before thinking VERY seriously about getting my own.

I'm so angry. I really hope they forget about it but they probably won't. I really hope horsey doesn't suffer but she probably will. She has no idea where she's going or who she's been put in the hands of.

I'm sad about the whole thing really.

I understand why you are annoyed, and also that it's very hard to standby and watch whilst someone, who should know better, gets what you want.

However, look at it this way. They are taking on the responsibly of a horse without, it appears, little knowledge and very little concern for the horse.

When you get your horse, I'm sure you will make sure that everything is in place, and understand how to deal and cope even when things go wrong. Also you will (hopefully) take on that horse with a view of giving your horse a home for life!!

The poor horse may end up being pushed from pillar to post, they may have problems with her, they may not. They might not sell her for the asking price, they may do.

Don't beat yourself up, you have tried hard to tell them that this is not a good idea. You may not have succeeded, but you have at least tried, and who knows, maybe this hair brained scheme might be knocked on the head.

Thank you so much for that post.

I'm going to bed now, think a good night's kip is long overdue.

Thank you again.

Fingers crossed they don't go ahead with it all. x

Idiots. I hope they get their fingers burnt early on so as not to make the same stupid mistake again. Hope pone doesn't suffer too much.

last place I was at the owners bought a pony from dealer it was a small mare all skin and bone ill looking wee thing no passport no vetting and stuck the pony straight in with the others and turned out to have strangles..we were grounded for months..it also dropped a foal that lasted only 4 days and a few weeks later they were happy to let a colt mount her in this condition..I am not there anymore and I have heard wee mare might be in foal.

Proof that you don't have to be intelligent to go to University!!!

Let them get on with it. If the boyfriend "used" to be what he claims, he obviously wasn't any good at it or he'd still be doing it. Don't get involved if your friend suddenly asks you for advice. Tell him you gave him that at the outset - don't do it and he didn't listen. You could end up in very difficult position in the future, so just don't get involved.
