Need to find a suitable turnout rug for pony monster for the winter.

According to the tape measure he is 5ft9, however he has an enormous chest and neck so it needs to be one with plenty of room at the front end.

He's a hairy, hardy native but he'll probably have a trace clip in winter (think that's what it's called!!) - I only want a medium weight for him, around 250g polyfill.

I'm hoping YM will be able to bring him in in the winter at 3pm ish, I'll then be down at about 5:30pm ish and so would like a rug that could double as a stable rug if necessary.

Oh, and it would be great if it was purple! And I don't have a big budget....don't ask for much do I?!

Any suggestions?

You may find a Mark Todd ideal - because they have a gussetted front, which is ideal for the wider fronted horse.

I think they come up big - I have one for Thumper which swamps him really.

I wonder what happened to the purple MW TO that you had before

FAL rugs are big in front, don't rub at all, and last for years... i have some that have done 8 winters, used every day (my horses live in them, literally... even with the horses that come in at night, i keep them on at night to dry out the outsides, as the insides never get wet cos of the double layer etc). some of my horses live out in them 24/7 for the whole winter, snug as bugs in rugs.
they come up as good as new with a professional clean every summer. i know they're costly, but they are so worth it. i can't buy a jacket for myself as good as these rugs for my horses!

Masta are very good for the bigger chested horses, and they do purple, no huge price tag but really good rugs.

Mark Todd rugs are brilliant for larger horses, they fit pickle who is large on the chest, and my friend has a large chested 14hh highland who takes a 5ft 9, they fit him perfectly.

I only have mark todd, Masta and one "the hunt range" rug

Mastas have a huge chest - and they do light, medium and heavyweights in purple (much to my consternation as I like black rugs and they only do a mediumweight black one, grr)

100% echo everything said here about FAL rugs. They are well worth the money. You can also get the extra neck ones - so say your takes a 5'9 rug, the back would fit as a 5'9 but the chest would be the equivalent of a 6' rug to give a good fit for a well built horse.

another vote for MT rugs. They have gussets at the front, and 2 different clip settings at the front. Plus the straps are adjustable so you can adjust quite a lot at the front. Sis uses these mainly on her hairy cob Sunny and we have found that the MT fit him the best. Oh and they don't break the bank either
