I clearly I am mad..... Never sit down and try and work out what you spend on your horse as the results can lead to one needing a stiff drink.
I bought my boy in January :D Taking in to account the purchase of Armas and all the associated costs since that point. I recon I have spanked a whopping 17k in just six months  Mind you 6k of that was buying a lorry. I did not need but wanted eeeeek
Most men I know when they hit 40 buy a flash car well I bought a bling bling HOS who I love to bits.
Would I change a thing the answer is a resounding NO as I am fulfilling one of my dreams :D

There are a lot worse things to spend money on and sounds like you think it's worth it. Mistake you made was to add it up. Ignorance is bliss! I am too scared to do that though OH keeps asking me what they cost. Would much rather have a horse than a flashy car.

Gosh, it must be bad if you need a drink at 7am! :D

I looked at the 'how much to charge a sharer' thread the other day and everyone had worked out how much their horses cost them per day.... I nearly fell off my chair when I went through all my bills!

Totally worth it though.

Well - you really have proved that you're new to horse ownership! :D:p

NEVER add it up! My husband started totting up how much I'd spent on my old horse by the time I lost her at 35. In full livery most of that time. 30 years x 12 months a year x say £500 a month..... plus all the extras - doesn't bear thinking about really.:p

Yep - scary stuff which doesn't bear thinking about so don't :p Why do you think the equestrian world single handedly supports the drink industry?

Lost my uninsured mare in April after aaaarrrrrgggghhhh in vet's fees (although hadn't cost me a bean at the vets in 19 years); insured ex-racehorse is usual accident prone self; and just bought new horse; 5 stage vetting; insurance; new saddle; etc. Broke but don't care. When I see their faces every morning it makes it all worthwhile. :)

The person who said owning a boat is like standing in the shower ripping up £50 notes, obviously never owned a horse!

I work full time just so I can pay for my daughter's horse. I will be glad when she finishes university, gets a good job (fingers crossed for any job) that will allow her to take on the costs - then I shall RETIRE !!!!!!!!!!! as I planned to do a couple of years ago

Been there, done that :)

So they do eventually leave uni with a degree, get a job and take over the costs of the horse.....;-) ;-)

I was beginning to wonder, especially when she talks about what WE are going to do when she finishes uni :-(

Start asking for contributions when she finishes, whatever job she's in. Me and my sister pay my mum by the month which covers everything bar entry fees, vets, insurance chiro etc. it's a set amount to cover feed and shoes really, but then my mum rides too, and owns our retired companion so we all pay equal amounts :)

What ever would any of us do with all that spare cash if we didn't have horses. Except of course we would save it all up and buy a horse :D :D :D
I refuse to add up what ours cost us and how much they have cost us since we got the first one going on for forty years ago  :D :D
