i need halp choosing a nose band please!

I have a pony who is currently just in a flash noseband. The problem is, even when this is done up as tight as we can do it without it interferring with this breathing he still manages to open his mouth. We tried a drop on him for a while to see if that made a difference but he just tossed his head everywhere. I was wondering if maybe a grackle would be a good idea as he does open his mouth and crosses his jaw a little but i was thinking that maybe a bit too extreme. He is just in a hanging cheek. Any suggestions please?
 
hanging cheek with french link. The people we bought him off said he had had no problem with this bit. I will try the drop looser but i think if i do it much much looser he may as well not be wearing a nose band at all!!!
 
Much of the time when you fasten a nose band tight the horse it'll actuall fight against it rather than trying to open his mouth he's trying to resist the nose band!!

Get someone experienced to watch you ride the pony and give you some help too. They'll see things you don't.
 
I had strings of people tell me to clamp my mares mouth shut. She acctaually goes best with no noseband or a very loose caveson. It is worth a try.

Also find a good instructor and have a few lessons, it might be that you are doing something differently to his old rider that is making him want to fight you.
 
you could see what he is like without. When using the flash make sure that the cavisson (sp) part of the noseband is tight enough as well as the flash. this is very important. also what mouth piece does your bit have. if it is a nutcracker and doesn't quite fit is mouth properly it could be squeezing his tongue of pushing into the top of his mouth and causing discomfort. also make sure there is no skin being pinched anywhere when the flash is really tight. and has he had his back done? sound bizare but problems in the back can cause problems in the mouth
