I have a 7 going on 8 year old-who i bought at 5 -vvv green. He had been doing very well but he had a fright when stewarding at a point to point( his first time and a huge regret that I did it) and he reared( first time he ever has done that) and I fell off-this has knocked my confidence and possibly his. He is good to hack out etc but at events he gets a bit excited for a minute or so and today when took him on a bridle ride- he just passaged all the way and would not settle - this scares me even though he doesnot buck or rear I have to say prior to the point to point we were coming on well- I wonder if the stewarding ruined him. . I am in a dilemma- do I keep him hoping he will grow out of this - everyone tells me he is a great horse, open book etc I am unsure how to progress with him as do not want to regret selling him. Any advice welcome

you've both had a fright and he will be picking up your nerves, get some experience professional help to get you through this.

the longer you let it go on the more issues will develop.

I wouldn't sell him just yet. Give yourself some time. Try going to a few quieter places and gradually build back up to busy occasions. He is just excited!

Try going with calm and experienced friends to quiet places, and then go to the places you have had the problems but not when the events are on if you see what I mean, when its all quiet, then go again but with a horse and rider you know and just build it up gradually.

Try going to some low-key things like riding club clinics, boxing him up to go for a lesson with another horse, or even just boxing him up and going for a hack somewhere new.

Thanks for messages will def take him again with more experienced riders poss part of my problem today- was one lady ( there was 3 of us) was scared to go into trot and kept saying my horse was upsetting hers so always wanted to walk- I am not bothered about fast work with him, but sometimes when faced with a problem I can not see the wood for the trees.! Also my previous horse who is now 23 and I got him aged 10 has never scared me so it bothers me that I get nervous.
