Hey guys.
I know this should prob be in careers & education but i never get any replies in there!
Basically i work in a kennels atm 4/5 days a week and while i quite like it i dont love it and tbh its awful pay for the amount of work.

Iv decided i need a new job or possibly an actual career as i want to do something with my life...

Just wondering what you all do? Does anyone have a job that lets them work from home?

I obviously love animals but there just seems to be no money in it and i need money to keep my pony and me so career suggestions please and where you work?

I really enjoy design,cars,promotions,photography,business and psychology... As far as turning them into a job i have NO idea! I dont even seem to have a particular talent/skill so i cant decide based on that either :(

Ps. Id love to have my own business of some sort

How old are you. I am an accountant, and while it is not a career I would have selected - I drifted into it because I got tired of not being paid properly working in horse industry. I enjoy it. It does take a certain skill set - a lot which can be learnt. You say you are interested in business, which is why i mention it. You can do an initial course at TAFE /tehnical college and see if it is your cup of tea before going to uni.

This is a job you do have the potential to work from home or work for yourself in - either as a bookkeeper or an accountant.

Could you start to expand on the things that you like while you are still working at the kennels? Do some photography (borrow a camera if you need), design advertisments for friends, write blogs on the internet to support and get your talents out there. In this current market its the best way to get yourself recognised. People are looking for innovation and experience at the moment - not necessarily qualifications.

Re setting up your own business - In your spare time (although I know that's not a lot working at kennels - been there!) try and brainstorm ideas of some kind of service you could provide, post on here to see if people would be interested. At first do it for free, if you're good enough at it people would be willing to pay eventually.

I am currently starting up a small business advisor website, specialising in service (especially equine) industries. This was something that I really wished I had access to when I was setting up my livery and competition yard. Now that I have the experience of having set one up myself I want to help others succeed in doing the same thing.

My 9-5 is just being a training coordinator but it pays the bills... I still have my yard but the OH runs it now.

I am a recruitment manager for a global company and I work from home part time. However it has taken years gaining experience in office and field based roles to get to the position where organisations are willing to be more flexible about where I work in order to get the benefit of my experience.

My sister on the otherhand is a graphic designer and has been working for herself from home from the age of about 28 but again the contacts she has made working for herself a lot more financially lucrative.

I think there are very few 'jobs' you can do working from home from the word go I think you need to come up with an idea and start your own business.

With your experience working with dogs could you set up a dog walking / pet sitting company or take on a franchise? We used to use one called pet pals which is nationwide.

Thats the problem i dont know what im good at.

In terms of qualifications i have my gcses a*-c and three a levels all c's. Thats it.

I am currently starting to design leaflets for my mums bf business and a friends business to see if i can start a business that way. I just dont know if i can make any money from it?
Again dog walking business iv considered but i think theres so many out there i dont know if its worth it.
 
You have to have a passion for what you are doing if you want to start your own business. Either for the service/product that you are offering or for making money. And be willing to fight for it, even when the chips are down.

If you don't know what you're good at, try different things.. find out! The only way you can learn is through trial and error. Make the most of the luxury of having a job (many people are without at the moment) and use this time to find out what you are passionate about, whether it's making money, photography, design...

Think of it as an opportunity to explore your talents, not a dead end because you don't know already what you're good at.

If you want to find an employer, you have good GCSEs and A Levels. Maybe at the moment you should just think about widening your skill set by diversifying in your spare time and doing a job that you don't love, but pays the bills?
 
I started my own business :eek: At nearly 16 I started taking commissions from people on the yard I kept my horse at, then I have just left college to attempt to make it as an artist full time :o It's not easy, and I don't mean the art, the business side still seems baffling to me even though I've got a good mind for selling things & loved Business Studies in school/college. There's a lot to do and right now it's a lot of hours especially with the amount of work I'm doing running up to christmas & a horse on top of that! :eek: It's doable though, you just NEED to know what you want to do. You can't really decide to go into it with no ideas. If you like photography/design/promotion, then website & advertisment design sounds like a good start, being able to provide your own images will also save money & make more money ie. you can go & photograph whatever products/services it is that are being advertised which means you don't have to pay to use anyone elses images, and the customer doesn't have to try and take their own (which might be poor quality as they don't know much about photography, or they might not have time!) so you can charge them extra for this... I'm sure you will think of something! :D

The kennels pays rubbish so im looking for a new job not only cz of the reasons above but cz i need more money :(
 
I work in ab office 9-5. Pays the bills.

I also work in a pub 4 shifts a week, and teach freelance locally.

You mention you like cars / promotions... As a promotions model who used to run her own team I can tell you if you have 'it' you are able to make good money from promotions work.... But it's hard tiring work and not really a career.

Not necessarily... think about doing work experience/volunteer work on your days off, in different kinds of businesses, not just in one particular industry. That way you will work out what you like.

People are absolutely gagging for cheap/free labour at the moment. Take advantage of that in your spare time.

Jenni- i am part of a promotions agency but all the work is so far away that id use my wages on petrol :(

Sol-i think that wats i want to do. Iv decided to start doing leaflets for small businesses i know but im not really sure how to make it progress
 
I'm the same as you in the fact that I have never known what to do career wise! I have found myself in Recruitment and been doing it for the last 4 years, not sure I want to do it all my life but the money is good if you do well.

If you fancy doing mine to get you started....! :p I have made a start on them (on Publisher) but don't have much time to do anything very different or fancy, and find it difficult to write good things about my work and also don't have much to spend! Let me know if you want to have a go & if you have a price :p

Maths has little to do with accountancy - I am absolutely appalling at maths. My OH always has a good laugh when people make this assumption. He is good at maths, and it does come in handy doing excel spreadsheet calculations/formulas but other than that you do not use maths at all. I do use a calculator/excel spreadsheet to add everything.

Accounting is about being a problem solver, having an understanding of commercial /business transactions, being good at communicating, being able to write letters well (english is more important than maths for accounting), attention to detail, thinking laterally, being able to research various topics etc

With all the computer software programs available, any calculations that involve maths, i just slot into a computer application.

My daughter was at Kirkley Hall College, in order to earn some spending money she enrolled with the TA, she went on to be a trainee veternary nurse, got called up to Iraq, came home safe luckily, travelled the world, then moved to Southampton via the TA, she has most driving licenses, HGV with trailer, forklift, she has even driven a tank, then joined the regulars, there are careers to suit most people and I know my daughter has never looked back it's worth a thought for young ones starting out
