I may be phoning about a horse for sale tommorrow. Its the first horse i have bought so im looking for ideas of questions to ask. Any advice would be great. Thanks :)

I guess you know the basics already eg, height/age/colour/gender/breed etc.

Ermm how about,
Why have you decided to sell the horse?
Has the horse had any medical problems/major injuries etc?
Does the horse have any behavioural problems?
How long have you owned the horse/how many owners has the horse had?
Is the horse good to shoe/hack out/box/travel etc?
Has the horse been taken to shows, if so, how does it cope?
Does the horse get on well with other horses?
Can I contact the horse's vet/farrier?

Hope this helps & good luck! :D

If the answers to the questions mentioned above are what you want to hear then take someone knowledgeable with you when you go to view. Ideally the person should be a good rider who can ride & tell you what they feel regarding how the horse moves & responds. If the horse appears to be what you want don't part with any money until it has passed a vetting. Have it vetted by either your vet or an independent vet but never the one that the seller uses for obvious reasons. Only when you are 100% happy that the horse is sound & the right one for you do you part with any money............also haggle the price......hopefully you may get the price reduced. Good Luck

Like buying a house.. If you go and see him and you love him, make your interest known but arrange to go back and see him with a "head not heart" approach.. Then you can be sure you get a horse you love bit is also suitable for what you want.. Take someone else horsey and knowledgeable along you trust to get an impartial opinion.. Good luck!

I have made a word document on my computer of questions to ask sellers when I enquire about horses, which I just print out. Then I don't forget to ask any questions, and I have space to write down the answers. This makes it easier to compare between horses and decide which ones I want to see.
