I suppose the ground will be too hard now...

Was offered to go cross country schooling today..First had to decide which horse to take, decided to take my much quieter, sane beastie..But I didn't think it'd frost so much as it wasn't meant to be too cold tonight..

Any chance of the earth thawing enough for it to be okay to go cross country schooling later? [bearing in mind we're jumping up to 2 foot 3 lol and will be with someone on foot so just walking around] Or would it be okay to go anyway?

I know zero to nothing about frost, all I know is beastie is very good on hard ground but still don't want to risk it. I'm gonna cry in a minute, I havn't been able to go anywhere for AGES for some reason or another, first twice the weather was too rainy and too awful, then I had to cancel as found out the place I was going has equine flu, and NOW the ground will be too hard.

I suppose it depends where you are going schooling. However, I know that our fields here haven't thawed out at all during the day during the last week, and I definitely wouldn't jump on them - it would be like jumping on concrete!

Courses in my area are all closed during winter. Aren't yours? I personally wouldn't because the ground is going to be far from perfect, if its frosty - even if it thaws a bit during the day it'll still be very solid underneath. Jumping on hard ground isnt good at all for leggies! I personally wouldn't dream of doing any XC (no matter how small) during the winter.

I didn't think it would frost too bad yesterday as weather forecast I looked at only had it down to 0 degrees.

Ah well nevermind looks like we won't be going, I can't check the course before we get there so..Thanks just wanted to check whether I'm being paranoid as I always am very xD

Isnt 0 degrees freezing and therefore a high chance of frost - or am I having a blonde moment?!

Anyway - no dont go cross country schooling unless you fancy a broken horse, most courses are closed for a good reason.

I don't do either so I'm just being devil's advocate but surely xc is no worse than hunting?

Completely agree, I don't see the problem with going xc through the winter providing the ground conditions are suitable (which at the moment they obviously are not!)

The reason most places close courses is to stop them getting trashed.

Yeah we didn't go.

Maybe I was being dumb about the weather. It was a UK chasers course maybe thats why it was open? I dunno, not sure why I didn't think there'd be a frost at 0 degrees -laughs-

Then thought I'd post on here as sometimes I'm very over paranoid about things when most people don't notice, but yeah definatly didn't go.

Thanks
