so I threw a ball for my dog, and she brought me back a hedgehog

so does anyone know anything about hedgehogs, its only a tiny little thing, tennis ball size, I know nothing apart from the fact if its out in the daytime its generally in trouble, I've shoved it in an old rabbit hutch with some water and cat food and atm my plans are to let it go when it starts to get a bit darker, but is that the right thing to be doing? can anyone advise plz

eeek yeah she's advocated and drontalled regularly .. that should cover my dog?

bah so taken from that website - "When to assist

The hedgehog is out during the day
Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals, sleeping during the day and foraging for food at night. They will only come out during the day if there is a problem. Any hedgehog found out during daylight should be taken to a wildlife hospital"

I've tried to ring my nearest and get an answerphone message basically saying were full, can't help you :-(

no answer on the phone for rspca etc ... bloomin hedgehog!

vet said to release it :-(

I managed to get through to St Tigglewinkles, who gave me loads of advice, 'Dennis' is now in my old guinea pig indoor cage in my lounge, on newspaper and a towel, we're to keep the heat constant for him so he does not hibernate, feed him on a night to encourage his nocturnal instincts and feed him meat based cat food, hedgehog fleas do not live on cats or dogs, not sure about guinea pigs so we'll keep them in seperate rooms

Unless I can find a rescue to take him, he'll be with us until April, yikes!

Dobiegirl I'm in Wakefield, near leeds, if you could find a rescue that would be great, I've tried soo many places and got absolutely nowhere ... thank you!

http://hedgehugs.net/ Try these people if no joy, let me know, I cant believe that stupid vet, what a ridiculous piece of advice.

hedgehugs were the first people I tried, they are answerphone only to let you know they are full, not taking any hedgehogs in and your not able to leave messages

on a plus note I have managed to get hold of the RSPCA who asked me to take him to a local vet in the morning, who will remove his ticks and then the RPSCA will take him to a wildlife centre, so I said I'm not taking him to a vets if your going to pts but she assured me he/she will be well looked after ... phew! panic over! If need be I would of kept him til April but I am sooo relieved I don't have to :)

thanks for all help and advice xx

Your vet is an idiot!!:D Well done for keeping him - if he's underweight then there is no way he will survive the winter, he's probably a late litter and hasn't had the time to pack on the pounds! I wouldn't worry about the fleas they are specific to hedgehogs and only live on them - some frontline will do the trick. We've had small ones we've found over the years winter with us, we had one one year called Dennis who lived in a tea chest in the kitchen and would growl and bash the box to bits when he wanted more food, he used to spread out like a pancake infront of the TV and chase the cats off their grub!! We successfully let him go in my grandparents garden and he lived happily there for many years, all the rest have been happily let go in the spring, I even used one for a few weeks in the veg patch before letting him on his way to get rid of alsorts of crawlies - he did a good job too!!:p

Thanks Alexart
Dennis has now gone to the vets and is awaiting the RSPCA to pick him up, vets have strict instructions to contact me if any problems and I will go and pick him up so have saved his bed here for now

a little pic of Dennis lol
