My younger horse pulled his suspensory several months ago due to being taken out hunting in heavy going when he wasn't fit enough (stupid me). He had the nessecary rest and seemed to be healing fine so i began riding him again and it was all going well but then once I started cantering him (after many months build up) I noticed some heat in his leg again so rested him until it went away (which was only a few days) then started working him again gently and all seemed fine then several weeks later there was some heat again (note he was never lame in these cases) so again rest then return to work. I always try to be very carefull where i work him and how hard but at the same time i do want him to get fiiter and i do want to test him to see how strong the leg is so occassionally I will push him abit (which is probably wrong) and sometimes it makes no odds and sometimes he gets this heat again. Anyway today and for the last few days there's been heat again

and his windgalls (which he's had since I got him years ago) are realy up so I've been ice tighting it and resting and bandaging it and i am generally at a loss because I think i am going to have to accept that it may never come fully right and it's really depressing! Heissuch a genuine little horse, he is not lame at all and is always keen to be ridden but if there's heat that means there's a problem right? I think i am going to have to get a vet to scan it but am really worried what they might say. Eugh, I hate this situation. Silly post really but i am feeling down and just wanted to share. Anyone have any experience of this? Thanks for reading

Aww thats such a shame! Very disciplined of you to give him a few days rest when his legs get hot/fill up. To be honest I'm not entirely sure if it is indicative of an underlying problem or not- I would speak to your vet or hope for some more informed replys on here

Vet isn't really interested. It is awkward because when he originally did the injury i lived up north so he was seen by vet up there, but I later moved down south and because new vet didn't see original injury they aren't too keen on doing anything about it. They just tell me to rest it, cold hose, support etc. Think I may have to insist it gets scanned, and probably change vets!

Believe me it is extremely frustrating! It is like they just aren't bothered at all. I think it's because my horse isn't lame, he just has heat in his leg so they just tell me the bog standard treatment fo rleg heat, rest cold therapy support etc which is all very wel but he had a past suspensory injury so it could be that flairing up again. Maybe they think I'm over-reacting who knows.
