I have a 14 year old ginger mare, recently on hacks she starts shaking her head up and down quite dramatically, and gets herself in such a state. She starts the hack off fine then if we go across a field or something then it begins and just continues till we are home regardless of whether we are no where near the field when she first started the head shaking and the drama.
She never has a problem in the field or in the school, it just suddenly comes on during hacks and it's not every hack even if we go the same way.
I believe it has something to do with the pollen, I have been trying the Vaseline round her nose theory which seems to help a bit but not totally.
I was wondering whether anyone has experienced something similar and has found any solutions. I have heard of using over the counter any histamines however am unsure of this method.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
thank you in advance
:)

Not much to add, but I'm in the same boat! Tried Pollen-x from global herbs with not much success. Got vet coming on weds so will see what he thinks!

It does sound pollen related. I don't use supplements on my head shaking horse as he's a very poor eater so I can't be sure he'd get any! I Vaseline his nostrils, use nose nets & also ear covers as once something sets him off he can't bear anything to touch his ears. I've also found that a uv blocking equilibrium full face mask with ear covers really seems to help when he's turned out. Liberal application of fly spray as well as again once something's set it off he gets really irritated with the flies.
