.....and I am too afraid to take her to the vets, for fear that he will tell me what i really can't face hearing.

Today she was sick, and there was blood in it. Quite a lot of it.

She has developed a cough over the last couple of weeks as well.

She is 12 years old, and i know for some dogs that seems really old, but pebbles dashes around like a puppy when i take her for a walk, though she does like to lie in bed the rest of the time, but then she has always liked peace and quiet, and lots of time in bed.

Tonight, my mum had some friends over, and they kept on and on about how she would probably die soon, and how she is so old, and how i need to take her to the vet, and be prepared for the fact that she probably wont be with me on the return journey.

I could have f*cking killed them.

I have had pebbles since I was 10 years old, she has been through the most improtant events in my life with me, and the thought of her ever not being here by my side devestates me.

I hope to god that she will be ok.

Sending you hugs.I know exactly where you right now and i is a bloody hard place to be.Hoping and praying that all will be okay and our dogs will go on for ever along side us.In september my 17 year old collie became very poorly and the light had gone from his eyes.He was telling me he had had enough. If your dog is being sick and there is blood then i'm sorry you can scream and shout at me but something isen't right. It dosen't have to mean the end.It could be something like a lodged stick in her gullet??.My collie had that too.A friend threw a stick for him and it got stuck in his throat (well it ruptured his tonsil cavity),he coughed alot and was sick too,it's their body's way of rejecting a foreign body. But surely it's better to know for the dogs sake.

You really should take her to the vet. If she is quite lively in herself you may be getting yourself worked up over something treatable. But if it is more serious, as you obviously know deepdown, you can't just ignore it and hope it will go away, it won't

I know it is a cliche but if you have a close bond with your dog you really can tell I think when they have had enough. Sending you hugs and keeping everything crossed it is nothing too serious, but there is only one way to find out.
Edited to correct typos/spelling mistakes - think my brain is frozen.

Ditto Murphy's Minder exactly. Sorry but you owe it to her to put her first, she should be your number one priority not your feelings. Hugs, it's never nice but think of the relief if it is treatable, you'll be upsetting yourself for virtually nothing while she could be in pain while you're dithering.

Ditto both the others. Your friends may not have been very tactful but they were obviously concerned for the animals welfare. If she's come to the end of her days which would you rather. that she dies vomiting blood and in pain or goes gently to sleep with only happy memories of you and her life?

It's very sad but get the poor thing to the vets asap, today if you can. Better a day too soon that an hour too late

Lots of {{{Hugs}}} to you, I can understand your wish to hide your head in the sand and hope it has gone away when you look up again.

But as the others have said, if something can be done she needs to see a vet now and not later. How will you feel if you take her to the vet later and you're told that they could have done something if you had came earlier?
If it is the end, I hope you can find the strength to let her go the way she deserves.

Lots of positive vibes for your girlie and a hug for you.

My dog was 13 last October. Like your girl, he still runs around and thinks he's a pup....jumping off the back of the sofa and leaping over the garden wall etc etc. Not a hint of him slowing down yet.

He had a nasty bout of the "trots" last year, where he was going every hour or so without any warning, and I went into panic mode thinking the worse too. Was awful. I think the fact he's never been ill before is what made it worse....the shock of him having something wrong.

Turned out my mother in law had "kindly" treated him to a great big chunk of meat from a joint of beef as he was "worrying the oven" whilst it was cooking. Took three or four days for him to get over the diarrhea and another couple of days after that to get his appetite back.

I reckon it took me a month to calm down afterwards and not think it was the end! Here's hoping it's something equally as innocuous for your dog.

Thanks everyone for replies, was a big help, and a kick up the bum to take her to the vets and face facts

MM- Luckily, pebbles is going to be ok!

Took her to the vets, and he said she had eaten something that had put a small tear in her throat, hence the blood.

Unfortunatly, we have literally no idea what it was she had eaten that could have caused such a thing

The problem being that we do not really walk our dogs, they have free reign to run in and out all day, and they get let out to run around the lake at least once a day when we do our checks too, so we think she may have picked up and eaten something that we were not aware of.

We have looked and looked for anything that she might have eaten that could have harmed her, but found nothing.

Today, after the walk, she was sick again (thankfully no blood though) -it is a shame, but i think i will have to keep her on a lead from now on, as i don't want her to keep getting sick.

Not funny when you have no idea what caused it but Whoa! for that she's going to be okay! It's always so nice to be reminded about, by both your Pebbles and by Patches dog, that it doesn't have to be the end only because they're old.

Hope you eventually can find whatever it is that she's found, from Sweden.
