.....for Ellie to retire.

She has given me an amazing 9 months, she has given me back my confidence and taught me so much. However, she now walks off when I appear with head collar or tack. She seems to be telling me she has had enough as she is usually very well behaved and would never walk off like that. She is 27 years old and has a hard year, so retirement is richly deserved. I will miss riding her, miss our jaunts round the village and surrounding areas, but I do feel it in my heart that she would be happier not working any more.

I look forward to many years of Ellie's company to come, and hopefully she can teach the younger ones a few manners along the way

Our first ride in a howling gale in January this year:

When I first got her: She had a hard winter

Doing a bit better coming into Spring:

She enjoyed coming to the house for a fuss - she particularly enjoys sleeping with her head through the living room window, head resting on the window sill!

On July 1st she got attacked by a dog in the field. We were worried that if infection set in we would lose her, but the old girl is made of strong stuff

The dog attack really took it out of her and she lost weight once more, but isn't looking too bad.

Thank you Ellie for a fantastic, worrying, happy, sad and exciting 9 months, may we have many many more together!

I don't know about putting her head through the window

its a hard decision to make i had to make the same one with my 13 year old that had arthritis because when i was getting on him he just couldn't carry any extra weight and i am only a light weight but would still be trying his hardest to walk but unfortunately his backend couldn't hold you up.
At least she can spend the rest of her days getting well looked after by you

I'm sure she'll love retirement with you, and might not even turn down the odd in-hand walk around the village etc?

Lovely horse - wishing her a happy retirement ( you never know , she might surprise you by sticking her head through the ( open ) window , bridle in mouth , wanting a quick hack ! )
