I went to feed my pony tonight, he is living out having spent most of last year on box rest following a tendon injury to his left foreleg. He wasnt waiting for me as he usually does when he hears my car and didnt come bombing up and looked a bit lame. I looked at his 'good' right leg and he has cut across above the hoof bulb from one side of the leg to the other the cuts about 1/2 cm deep by 8 -10 cms long, and has lots of minor cuts all the way up the back of the pastern. I cant work out if its an over reach as the grazing is on clay soil and very slippy as its very wet, or he has got caught on wire or glass.

He is very sore and is keeping all his weight on his bad leg.

I have tried to clean it with hibscrub and sprayed it with purple spray. Unfortunatly no one was about to hold him and the heavens opened so I did my best but he kept trying to strike out, I m hoping to have a better look at it tomorrow. thank god he had a tet. booster in May.

Any suggestions for dealing with this type of injury? I dont see much point in getting the vet out as its self explanatory what is wrong.

If he is sore and the cuts are deep nasty I would say at the very least he needs pain relief and possibly antibiotics to prevent an infection.

He seems a little bit happoier today, I cold hosed the injured leg, cleaned the wound with the help of the y/o and have wrapped it up with a sanitary towel over the cut area, the vetwrap and a stable bandage. The y/o other half has checked the field and a bottom strand of wire has come of the fence so it looks like this is what injured his leg. Ver y sorry for my poor boy, unfortunatly around here barb wires the norm and I'm on the one farm where they actually maintian it...

Personally if barbed wire was the cause I'd be wanting a vet check and some antibiotics just in case...

so would i i'm afraid
i rushed a friends horse to the vets last year with the same sort of injuries although worse than yours sounds (it was a mess) and after flushing and flushing a small piece of broken of "barb" was washed out of his leg ,it had gone right in just like a small blackthorn and he certainly would not have recovered had that not been found

Hi all

Thank you for the comments, I had a vet out yesterday but for slightly different reasons. I checked my passport for my horse ( no idea why as I was just having a general sort out). His flu and tet should have been done in may but when I looked at the passport I thought 'oh that looks odd' googled what he had been injected with. It was the flu only vaccine and not flu and tet... so I rang another vets who came out within an hour of call , gave him a tet booster and checked the wound.

The vet was very complimentary about my wound managament skills so at least I got something right! His pulse wasnt raised and no wounds near joints, just a very nasty cut thats healing well. He has a course of antibotics and is developing his acting skills ' Im soooo sorry for myself' but has gone from 9/10th lame to 4/10 in two days so hes getting there.
