Confession time.

draw reins.

I hated them. really hated them. Used them badly on a horse i owned a few years ago and felt i achieved nothing with them - didnt hurt him - just didnt get anywhere!

Id been battling with my horse for a year, schooling etc, she leans badly on the right rein and just needs some support, so yesterday i rode in side reins, which worked brilliantly but i didnt feel safe (i wanted a quick release option)!

So bought some draw reins and popped them on today (loose).... my mare went like a pro... honestly i had to check this horse was mine!....

Took them off after a beautiful walk and trot... she then (mostly) maintained her good going, asked for a canter and again just perfect.

We even achieved rein back and walk to canter.... so obviously shes actually listening to me now

I feel like ive wasted a year. Ive achieved so much today than i ever did

sorry very pointless rambly post... but any tips on draw reins/useage/time (other than "dont use them") would be welcome!!!

Like i said i hated them... Im well aware in the wrong hands they are bad news.

They are almost a very 'taboo' word these days what with all the NH methods and other gadgets on the market.

Each to their own i say! If used correctly to acheive a desired result without causing discomfort or pain, being ridden in for hours on end, etc.. then i cannot see why not! :)

i absolutely loathed them..... just thought they were evil.

I now consider them a necessary evil. :)

The change in my mare is incredible.... in 1 lesson. I actually cannot wait to ride again :)
