I brought our 12.2 section A X in last night and she was shivering all over. Granted, it had been raining all day, but the others weren't bothered, so why was she? She hasnt had a rug on for months and the only reason she was rugged last winter was because she was clipped out for Pony Club.
I put a fleece on the help dry her off and gave her an extra-big straw bed, but what do i do next time it rains? Rug her up or leave her to shiver? I know it's just the body's natural way of trying to warm up, but imo she should be the last one on our yard to feel the cold!
Hmmmm.....

I have a Pet shop/feed store and a number of people came in yesterday to buy emergency bedding for shivering ponies to be stabled on.

I think the rain was very relentless and with summer coats they just couldn't cope.

I actually brought mine in!

I have a Welsh D who really feels the cold. I would put a lightweight rug on her next time it rains.

My 28 year old Welsh x was rugged before it started raining (and it rained and blew hard for 7 hours yesterday) in a lightweight and luckily I went up early to see to her as she was shivering and utterly miserable. It was unseasonably cold, to the extent that I put the central heating on when I got home and I'm a "put a jumper on" person. I opened the gate and she ran past me and straight into her stable! Message understood and she had a nice night in, a chance to lie down and have a good rest and her feet could dry out. I can't tell you how relieved and pleased with herself she looked in her stable, tucking into her supper.

I think i just found it odd that none of the others were shaking. She was in the same field as my 19 year old, and she wasn't bothered at all.
Ahh well, will have to keep a better eye on the weather in future :) Thanks all x

some welshies just aren't as tough as we think. I've had 3 and a WC x none of them have been very tough when it comes to cold and rain.

My 25yr old is rugged in wet weather. Hes been rugged for the last 10-12 yrs.
He is stabled at night all year round (kept the same as the horses, plus gets him off the grass) so that softens him up.
He wears an unlined rug most if the time, but in the winter is in a heavyweight rug.

My tb is tougher than my wleshie! Another thought though, do you groom your pony regularly as this can remove a lot of the oils in the coat and they are no longer waterproof.
