to loan! I don't want to jump or event or race or dressage... I just want to throw on a saddle and amble up the mountain (after the thaw, of course).

Why has every loan horse need to go to a 'compitition' home??? I have a GREAT home for someone :|

Wonder whether any of the rescue charities have any horses suitable? I love happy hacking horses, worth their weight in gold.

I don't really want to buy (budget?) but would like something 15hh + really. I'm 5'6" and 9.5stone so doesn't have to be big boned (in fact I kind of prefer finer boned though I would want a good doer so its all up for consideration).

Doesn't really matter if it has stable vices as long as it can live out with the others, although I do have stables if needed.

Probably something older tbh, I've already got 2 youngsters I'm bringing on!

Oh, I forgot you said to loan, hehe. Sorry about that! Oh well, ignore this next bit then. :p

I keep stumbling over this advert for Dolly and I just love her. Certainly not fine-boned though and I guess is quite a lot of money considering she's nearly 16 and the economy sucks:

I just think she has such a kind face and looks so easygoing!

Not many people own their own land MosMum. I know of at least two people who have horses from charities at livery yards which they do not own.

In the current climate I'd not only scour the internet, the rescue charities etc but would also put some Wanted ads up as well. Lots of people are struggling and would love to find a nice home for their horse without actually selling them.

Good luck with your search.

place wanted ads everywhere, in all your local tack shops. and offer references. you're bound to find something. scour t'interweb too. there are lots of people looking to loan out safe little horses (i did...) but you'll usually find people only want to loan relatively locally to themselves, so it'll probably be more fruitful to keep your search close to home. also, ask on here every now and again, there are lots of people on here in your area

good luck!

Not really any help but I think a lot of people advertise their loans to " a competition home" cos the animal is too much for them or they cant be bothered to put in the effort to do the work on it so they want to loan it out to someone for free schooling and so they can be the proud owner if it does amount to anything. Dont shoot me down I know there are genuine loans out there but I have come across the above scenario too many times.

Ohhhh Holly she's BEAUTIFUL! Really like the look of her- you should buy her (lol)!

Ok ISHmad, I will ring around a few charities, thanks for the heads up! :)

Have you tried South wales Animal rescue. They have horses for loan homes. They have a nice mare called Clover there at the mo` well did last time i looked. they`re up brynaman I think.

Someone on my yard placed a wanted advert for a safe and quiet happy hacker this summer and got lots of calls from people with 4 year olds that were apparently very quiet! She approached me to see if I would consider loaning her my super safe lazy connemara. He really prefers a slower pace of life than I expect from him and it has worked out really well for both of them. I have had him since he was a baby and didn't want to sell him I struggled to have the time for him with my other boy eventing and it seemed to perfect solution.
My point of this is - sometimes it is worth looking close to home as there may be someone that you know who has the perfect horse for you and there is no harm in asking if they might consider loaning the horse!

hey mosmom,

have u thought about a retired polo pony? They are the BEST horses and there are many looking for homes after their competitive career is over...

Polo ponies are so well mannered and generally very easy to ride, keep etc. Im not sure where you are based? but you could normally pickup one foc to a good home or for a small fee. They generally will have a blown tendon or something similar but fine for happy hacking etc...just not full on polo anymore.

Worth a thought....

I know a happy hacker/fun ride horse going for extremely cheap - being threatened with the knackers yard. Lovely little black ISH, 10 odd?

What's wrong with the horse? threatening with meat man???

I too am looking and am having great difficulties finding a horse as no-one is prepared it seems to allow their horse to go on Full loan...although I may have find a solution??

Mosmum - have you been round the local livery yards at all? as when I was looking for a yard I came across a couple that were wanting someone to ride or loan....yet not advertising!

I've advertised everywhere....on interweb but negative response really....I truely hope you find something suitable.
I'll keep my eye out for you too...

My friend is looking for a happy hacker for loan up here in nottingham but there is nothing about. Like OP said they all want them to go to competition homes. She would even take and oldie to give it a loving home for the rest of its days.

My boy came originally on winter loan from a trekking centre: I liked him too much and bought him!!!

You might be a bit late in the year unfortunately, but perhaps ask around at local riding schools/trekking centres in early autumn as sometimes they are looking for winter homes for their horses - which might suit you?

Just an idea......

Mo's mum shame you dont want a youngster to loan, we have a 15hh coloured gelding for loan, but hes only 3, but a lovely chap & it is a long term loan, were not looking for someone to put in all the work & then take him back in a few months.......& we have our 14.1 welsh cob coming back from loan in the next few days...sadly hes too short for you lol!!

navaho- how mature is he for 3? Obviously still need schooling/bringing on, has he been ridden much? Schooled at all? I don't necessarily mind about age so much as want something honest and relatively calm and quiet... I know that rarely describes a 3 year old lol

He was hacking out nicely until a couple of months ago (walk, trot & canter), i haven't had the time to ride him of late (& recently the weather hasn't helped), he is very honest & very willing to learn & there most definitely isn't a bad bone in his body, he really is a nice chap to be around. He does need lots more work & due to having no school hes not done any schooling at all...hes a blank canvass really with all the basics in place....we are probably expecting alot hoping someone will take him on but he is totally going to waste here & ive more than got my hands full.

Have you tried South wales Animal rescue. They have horses for loan homes. They have a nice mare called Clover there at the mo` well did last time i looked. they`re up brynaman I think.

Clover is now a hat rack due to malnutrition and neglect.
