on my cob!

My lovely boy was hogged and clipped to within an inch of his life when I got him, but now, much to my joy, we have signs of hairyness again. I would like to do my best to get his feathers full and silky ... so recommendations please for products and care from those of you who know how to maximse the hairy beauty that is your cob :) I am desperate to avoid the 'bog burnt' look ... although I am not completely sure what it is

Bog burn is hair that became dry and broke off in the mud. I found Seven Day Mud Away a useful product for keeping feather in good condition in winter and avoiding dreadlocks forming. Conditioner after shampooing is a must too.

Mine stays in at weekends to get fully dry and clean then has baby oil liberally applied, which helps protect the skin/feather for the coming week.

We left our little one's feathers alone this winter as we have no running water or electricity and we didn't want to keep washing with freezing cold water, with no effective way of drying them. Unfortunately, our fields have been extremely wet and she is very bog burnt. Gutted :(

We are about to move yards so it will be much easier to maintain them from now on. Next year we plan to use pig oil and sulphur and we're going to try applying a bit of megatek to help them grow - it worked wonders on her rubbed mane and tail last summer. My friends use 7 day mud away with good results.

It's probably a case of trying things out to see what works for your cob. Just be sure to patch test everything before applying too liberally. I know quite a few who have had reactions to baby oil.

In 6 years of owning my cob and him having great feathers, this year he has bog burn on the front of each foot :( gutted! I've used a shires mix and then tried 7 day mud away but nothing worked. When the mud started to dry and so was really cloggy it only took a day to happen, not sure how long it will take to grow back. Normally either the shires mix or the 7 day mud away do a really good job x

thanks all ... I will definitely try a few things, one at a time, and patch test first, to see what will suit him best.

lol, I don't splash out on Pantene for my own hair ... but I guess my boy is worth it!

Pig oil and wash with pure soap flakes, dry with wood flour. All available from heavy horse supplies.

This horse has lived out all winter. No bog burn at all.
