So, I was out riding around a few country lanes, and I saw a lady on a bike... being pulled along by two husky's. At great speed. It was bloomin' Brilliant to watch, and the dogs looked like they were having a great time...

I have decided, that I want to do this with Tyson because well. Think how much more I could nacker him out!!! BUT...

*Can it be done with only one dog? *Does it matter that said dog is only really pretending at being a proper husky? *How on earth do you train them to just hoon around and take you places? *What if he sees a cat, p***es off and topples me off my bikey?!

Answers on a post card please :D

PM Cyrus or Suzysparkle or Liz...there's a Liz something on here too, they all run their dogs in harness. And Blackcob, who scooters/bikes her dog.

You can of course bike/scooter one dog. I was going to get one a while ago but I got hooked on tracking and I'm a bit skint so it can wait for a while!
I do run him off a bike occasionally as part of an endurance test we do, but he has to run alongside, not pull.

Because of his age (I am not sure what happens with huskies) I would wait until he is 12-18 months old because of his GSD half, before you start doing intense pulling/road work/high impact stuff, to protect his joints for the future.

Thankies. Yeah I wont start making the poor pup pull my flab around just yet ;)
Definately something I'd love to do with him though! Looks immense fun.

- Yep, you might just need to pedal/scoot a bit up hills with just one :p
- Nope, I've seen some really unlikely breeds doing it, including a rather majestic pair of red setters
- Put harness on, attach to bike, get someone to bike/run ahead of you shouting 'COMEONTYSONGOODBOOOOOY!'. They don't need any encouragement after that first time. :p Directions are learnt out walking, any time you change direction shout 'gee' or 'haw' as appropriate and then slowly transfer that to the bike scenario
- Wear a helmet, elbow and knee pads. Squirrels happen. :o

It is super super super fun and now the mornings are cool enough it's the ideal time to start him for winter. You will need to buy some gear, a well-fitting harness is crucial (not necessarily an x-back, as you might think, depending on your set-up) as is some form of bungee on your towline, and if using a bike it's advisable to buy or make an antennae to keep the line off the wheel.

I'm not getting out as much as I'd like at the moment because I can't find a bike rack to fit my car - this is my excuse for asking for a Pawtrekker scooter for christmas as it'll fit in the back. :D I'm still trying to work out how to tape a camera to my helmet to film her in action...

Omg, i'm TOO excited now. I shall begin directions training pronto :)
When do you think he'll be old enough/grown enough to start? He's nearly 1 now, and CC suggested between 12 - 18 months?

Husky people seem to start them very early - I hear about dragging branches/tyres at 8-10 months and running with a team at 12 months - but I think CC is right in that the high-impact stuff should wait as long as possible.

Dax is 14 months now and has only done very short runs to date, just to get acquainted with all the gear and commands more than anything, but by the end of the winter she'll be 18 months+ and I see no reason why we won't be doing long steady runs by then.

Spudlet - how much?! :p Then again it'd probably be cheaper than trying and failing to strap an iPhone to my head... :o
