As I was leaving the yard tonight, their was a guy feeding Roo grass, now maybe I'm just too suspicious but he had that look about him. He was their a good 10-15 minutes pulling grass up for her, and she's an easy horse to catch. He asked me her name, I told him and instantly thought 'you idiot, shouldn't have told him that'
So I walked up the lane for my bus, stopping every two strides to look back. Got on the bus and cried all the way home, honestly thinking that he was going to steal her.
I got home and told my family through the tears, and my sister and my boyfriend both visited her within the next 2 hours, and my sister says she'll check again on her way to work.
My sister also spoke to my yo who didn't answer his phone when I tried to contact him, he said it's the 'village idiot' who has been told countless times not to feed the horses but still does' I'm so relieved, I have never been so fearful, but I got it into my head that that was it, she'd be gone.

Thanks, yes I was.
I've never been one who will let myself cry in public, but I couldn't help it, I cried all the way home on the bus.
I would have sat in the field all night if I hadn't forced myself to go home.

How worrying for you - I would have been the same!

If he really is from the village and around a lot - the next time maybe just speak to him - say hello and ask if he talks to the horses a lot etc - you never know he could become the unofficial eyes and ears of the yard for you in return for giving Roo a carrot/pat etc (one carrot won't spoil her diet!!) Better to have someone like that looking out for you and the horses than chasing him off - you never now what he may see and hear.

I do have a question though, why did you not tell him not to feed the horses and let him know he shouldnt be hanging around them?

If i saw someone suspicious hanging around Jed i would have told them to sling their hook as soon as i spotted them.
 
However please ensure that your horse is both Freezebranded on the shoulder and also Micro-chipped so that in the event of it being stolen it can be identified.

I didn't say anything because he looked big and nasty, I was scared he'd get aggressive with me.

Yes you can have a 15yo freeze marked. Just call Farmkey and arrange for them to come out. It's not expensive and is peace of mind for you.

I would have questioned him as well TBH, or hung around til he'd left. We get random people wandering around our yard and they are always challenged.

Ask your Mum or Dad to be with you when you call. Look up both the freeze marking companies on the net (I can't remember both names!). It'll cost about £45-ish for the freeze marking and about £20 for the microchip (depending on if the vet is coming out to do just that or out already for something else).
