Have just been accused of being potentially cruel to my horse for considering Rockley rehab, all amicable now but was shocked at someone saying that I would put my horse through unnecessary suffering! I would'nt harm a hair on his head! Guess I will come across this again :(

Perhaps sadly. The thing is people are probably thinking they know best for your horse and are thinking of him. It can seem questionable when understanding is limited to traditional thinking.

Rockley is a hidden gem, hardly anyone Iknow has heard of them. Have an uphill battle convincing people I am not choosing an impossible option! It's ok I know I am doing the right thing. That's all that matters.

Don't worry about it, I have encountered some horrible, ignorant people since I've been on my journey. Some people just don't want it to work and won't believe it as they are so close minded. It's sad really.

I've heard some hilarious things - before I sent my horse to Rockley I was told he wouldn't be able to go on the road, compete, jump, do more than walk on grass and that Rockley doesn't work. I spent many an evening sobbing into my poor boys mane as I had nowhere else to turn and couldn't understand why people were so negative.

I can look back now, less than a year later and know I made the right choice as my written off horse is back competing, jumping, XC - you name it he does it. Try not to let the negative nellies get you down but do be aware that they are unlikely to change their minds - some people are just unable to open their mind to something new.... Just be grateful you aren't one of them :)

Agree with all this I took my mare BF and I used to be one of the disbelievers but I had no other option and it gave her another 8 months. People are really closed to it and think its impossible for there horses, I truely believe that more horses will start to be bf in future!

Been there too :( I actually got accused by barefooters on a barefoot forum of abusing a rehab horse. He was sound at twelve weeks, jumping at thirteen weeks and has now been sound, having had an appointment to put him to sleep cancelled to come to me, for more than three years.

Stick to your guns, your horse will thank you.

If I can't do this myself I would love to send my horse there, sadly I can't afford it,so I'm hoping my home rehab will work.

I think it has yet to dawn on my bf that I'm intending on keeping mine barefoot, and that despite being on maternity leave from now and having lots of 'free' time (yeah right!) I'm quite happy to not ride til at least feb/march if that's what it takes. Pressure is totally off to compete or achieve anything, and quite happy to hopefully be able to take horse for walks in hand with me carrying the baby if possible (only along our gravel track where I can just let him go if he prats around!)

Thanks everyone. Vet happy so should be on the 'list' soon. :) Horse blissfully unaware and happy in the field. I am trying not to get my hopes up too much would be such a fantastic told you so!!

There will always be haters

There will always be horses who are killed because their owners and vets can't accept alternative ways of initiating healing. The 1 year vet cover has a lot to answer for.

I dropped my boy off to Rockley yesterday and its a fabulous place - lovely calm feel about it and he settled straight - so glad he is on the list for it now - you must be over the moon :) Just ignore them and give them a ear to ear smile when you ride past them in a few months time :)

my vet said it would be 'suicide' for my horse if i tried him barefoot (hes currently recovering from founder in one foot - cushings/lami induced) hes well on the road of recovery now, hopefully, and seems happy, comfortable and sound in gel pads and heart-bars (along with prascend and strict diet). Im well aware of the research around rehab of founder BF, and the arguments for/against heart-bars (which i really dont want to trigger here!) Just wanted to say that the long term plan for my horse is BF and my vet thinks im mad, im really surprised and upset by the negative reaction to BF despite all of the research coming out! Id love to send my boy to Rockely, i did email them but no response, i don't suppose if anyone knows if they take Founder/lami cases for rehab?

It's very unlike Nic not to reply, but the last I knew, she couldn't handle cases of metabolic disease with the track and herd regime she uses.

Ive sent Rockley a couple of emails before asking about types of surface i could use at home, initially for my own then maybe for liveries in the future but they didnt reply to me either :( Ive just spent almost a year getting a horse to the rock crunching stage. He had brill feet. Sold him on to new owners who promptly had him shod. oh well.

It can be hard listening to stupid, ignorant people, especially when you're worried about your horse. It's worse when your vet is unaware of the alternatives or feels threatened by them. There is a lot of support out there nowadays for people in your situation, with like minded folk who have had great success, just go on FB, lots of barefoot groups there. Be strong, it wasn't long ago Horse and Hound forum members ridiculed barefoot, even that's changing, lol.

Just don't discuss just send him and say as little as possible.
As Brucea says the year to spend five grand does not always operate in the horses interest.
FWIW if I had a issue in this area with a horse I would send them to rockley .
