Ibizan hounds...

Since nobody else have replied, and I probably have an above average interest in different dogbreeds, I couldn't resist giving you my impression (though I don't think I've met one in real life, they're very rare over here).

It is one of few sighthound breeds that I've read about, that is supposed to retrieve their prey to the hunter. But where as for example the Cirneco dell'Etna and Podenco Canario is supposed to kill their prey before retrieving it, the Ibizan Hound (/Podenco Ibicenco) is ideally supposed to retrieve their prey alive to their hunter, though some Ibizan Hounds kills the prey before retrieving.

They're described as inventive, curious, both gentle and determined, affectionate but on their own terms, tend to "sit on the fence" at first around strangers, obedient when they feel for it, kangaroos in disguise, elite class climbers, can't be let off leash unless in a fenced in area, their radius of action outdoors is described as infinite (! ) but indoors they want to be in the same room as their family, and they enjoy the company of other sighthounds (especially their own breed).

Although they're sighthounds, they can hunt just as well by using their nose, but though a quite high prey drive, most of them quickly learn that small pets can belong to their family, however that rule usually only applies to the family pets.

The ideal Ibizan Hound owner is described as someone willing to exercise both their body and mind, and who is very patient, for example, I've read that if you're throwing down trash into your rubbish bin, it might happen that your Ibizan Hound is standing on the other side of the rubbish bin, picking everything out again.

So basically, I would say that there is much that resembles other sighthound breeds, but for example, they seem to have a little bit higher need of mental activation and is a little more active, interested in what is happening indoors, than what I think sighthounds are generally.

(And just because it is cute: )

:)

That sounds very much like my whippet bitch!! :D

Sounds like you live an interesting life Montmorency... :)

I maybe should have added that the info about Ibizan Hounds comes from various dog breed books, but some things, like that about the rubbish bin, the description of them as kangaroos in disguise and elite class climbers, comes from the Swedish Sighthound club's breed info page.

I also forgot to ask if you're planning to make an addition to your doggy family Picklenash?

:)

Thank you FL, that has echoed everything I have been able to find out about them which is really helpful :):)

I saw a picture of one on a sighthound page on Facebook and he looked absolutely stunning, I was really quite tempted, but I have to say that I think my lifestyle wouldn't really suit one unfortunately :( At the moment when I go to work the greyhound gang are very content to sleep all day, but it seems that Ibizan hounds have rather more energy and need a lot more stimulation and exercise than a greyhound :D

I will go and have a look at the Discover Dogs exhibition at Crufts I think, and see if there is someone there to talk to :) There are only 12 Ibizan hounds entered at Crufts, so I think they are very rare over here too :)

The breeder of my IG has some as well as the iggys. They were lovely dogs in the house, loved attention and seemed really nice dogs to hang around. From what I remember they very much loved their humans and very big soft creatures. Could of brought them home too!

I've never owned one but have boarded a few.

Lovely hounds and a bit like my Borzoi in attitude. Not as slobbish as greyhounds very food orientated IME.

Slobbish  None of my greyhounds have ever been slobbish  :D:D

Thanks s4sugar, having known a few Borzois that gives me a really good idea of their temperament - pretty much what I had expected, which is good news :)

Ok - greyhounds are 40 miles an hour couch potatoes and can go from full on to zonk in seconds. Bozos & Ibizans take longer to wind down. :)

Ahhh I see.....I must admit I do wonder whether I can ever move to having a normal breed again, after having the laziest breed in the world for so long :D
