I am looking after my friend's veteran horse whilst she is on holiday. He is 28 and in really good shape - very low mileage. Due to the snow and ice I have not been able to ride him. He is usually ridden two or three times a week for an hour or so each time. Will it hurt if he is not ridden for two weeks until the weather improves?

Can you not walk him out in hand for half an hour?

I have to say that in some respects I think regular, gentle exercise can be more important to the veteran than the ten year old. Arthiritis and the like benefit from slow and regular movement. Especially if he is accustomed to this.

My horse is younger but no I wouldn't be concerned. I havn't ridden for five weeks now mainly due to ice etc on roads as don't have a school to use.

I'm not prepared to go on roads when it may be icy with the idiot drivers we get nowadays, would rather wait till spring!! He does get turned out every day though and obviously more of a problem if your horse is stabled 24/7 xx

Having a little holiday may do him lots of good.

Whenever there's snow and ice I'm not bothered about riding so mine have holidays. Even as a 4yo my current horse came back into work no problem but so much better after a break.

Mine haven't been out the stable in nearly a week now,as paddocks are way over knee height in snow, yard is knee high, not chancing them in it,as we have made little walkways through snow on yard, now they are ice.

I haven't ridden for the past 4 weeks either due to the weather/dark evenings/other commitments. He does get turned out each day but I certainly wouldn't risk riding on the icy roads - I don't have a school either:(
