This morning I noticed that little Jack had a chunk missing out of his near fore pastern. I didn't notice last night as my light wouldn't turn on in my stable so just put him to bed and gave him his tea.

Now he is only 3 and he WOULD NOT stand still. I even had someone else holding another leg up and he could still hop around! I think he's fine, cleaned & dressed it and he's out in the sick paddock now. Not showing any lameness, a bit swollen and warm.

Could this have been the ice? The slice cuts up so lays underneath the hair, with the hair underneath the area scraped off.

The ice in the field by the gate is very thick and covers the frozen hoof dents in the mud. I'm a bit hesitant to turn him back out in there now until it defrosts! Has anyone had anything similar happen?

He doesn't seem too bothered :P

personally, i would turn him out as usual... if hes no severely lame, its not infected etc. i would defo stick to the same routine i already had, as accidents are accidents and every horse has them now and again! he may be less likely to do it again if he did slip on the ice... now he may be more cautious! hope the little man will recover quickly :D

Could easily be he's slipped and knocked his leg with another hoof as well. My mare had stifle problems last summer but has been okay for a while until this ice but she seems a bit uncomfortable again now :(
I managed to put my hand in a bin full of water to fill a bucket and nearly cut my arm on the ice it's really sharp :( can't wait for it to be gone!!

dan did this last winter sounds exactly the same as your cut upwards was a bit swollen n warm but never went lame. he did his on ice the ice was so thick last year was a nightmare xx
