Over the past couple of days there are two seperate things that has accured with Tilly.

Firstly she is coming up with buttercup rash on her nose - it looks like rain scald, but it's not, and she is also de-loused - and as fast as we are cutting them they are growing back (cutting weekly). We can't put down weed killer as the ponies are grazing there, and the buttercups are in all fields.
The odd thing is, is that she only has the reaction on her bay/black bits of her nose not her white and pink areas - so assuming it is not sunburn.
She has got a fun fly mask on with U.V protection, but she is just taking it off (to clever for her own good

). Can any of you suggest any advice to put onto her skin to try and help with the reaction.

Secondly, the bl**dy horse is driving us mad ATM because she is rubbbing her tail like mad. She is fully up to date with worming, and de-lousing, and we have tried flyspray, E45 cream, camrosa cream, and baby oil, also given it a good bath. But none of it seems to stop the itchyness, so now she has a very little tail to speak of.
Can you suggest any other ways of preventing her from rubbing it?
And also if you know what is causing it that would be even greater help.

Thanks

Have you tried NAF D-itch? My pony had really bad sweet itch and this was the only thing that worked, it comes in an ointment and a feed supplement. Is there any flaky skin or fly bites on her tail? We have a pony who just loves to rub so we've had to put electric fence all round the field so she has nowhere to rub!

My dads cob gets buttercup rash on his nose, can be quite nasty! We use sudocrem (thinking thats not how its spelt but hoping you will know what I mean) and finds that works really well! And is a dam bit cheaper than buying horsey products jus get it from your local chemist!!

We had a pony who had a very itchy bottom and put stop itch no more cream on her which is for sweet itch and also has a fly repellant in it or you could water down some benzyl bensoate (get from Chemist) and put in a spray bottle and spray on the tail. Both these have worked for us but find the cream very greasy so only tend to use on ears to stop flies eating them. Certainly knew when we forgot to spray her as she always came in with bog brush tail.

Benzyl benzoate is the cheaper of the two

benzyl benzoate is no longer available from your chemist!!
Nettex's stop itch and Carr, day and martins Killitch both contain it though and are good at stopping them rubbing

I did a google search for BB and found a chemist direct site which sells it (500ml bottles too). It is v good for an itchy tail.

Thers some new stuff on the market that kills buttercups, its called Bannish, its similar to graze on you just spray it over the buttercups and leave it for a week before putting horses back on. Cant you split the field their in now with electric fencing and just spray half, then other half a week later???
Will solve your problems

Concerning the rubbing of the tail, mine does this if she gets bitten around her udder and her midline and between her back legs. It's not just normal midges, but larger ones as well. I find if I put a repellent gel all around that area then it stops completely. I use Natural Equine Fly Off gel but it's been discontinued so you may find something else similar. It's not got any DEET in it though as mine is sensitive to it.

Agree with the idea of using Bannish! As for the itching, have you heard of No Rub, by Leovet - it is EXCELLENT!!!
