Hi,
I'm looking at horses to buy and am looking at youngsters (2-4 y.o.'s) I have come across a couple of Irish Draught x Thoroughbreds and from the ad pictures am really wondering how they will turn out.
So, anyone who has an IDxTB, what did they looks like as youngsters and what have they turned into? I am interested in the general look of the horse, are they more towards the TB side or ID and can you tell from early pictures which to expect?? So, if they look finer do they get stockier and more 'built' as it were as they age or do they look chunky from a young age? (Obviously I don't mean the muscle as they come into work although appreciate that this will play a part in their overall look)
Gawd, sorry if I haven't explained very well!

She has filled out a lot as you would expect but not bulked up a huge amount

I also had another mare who's dam was the ID and she was a lot heavier

The one in my siggi is a ID x TB

They're a really lovely cross - my boy has the best nature . He's 11 though haha, so not really a baby-adult

Dests thank you so much, that's exactly what I was after. Really interesting to see the differences, very deep girth in the second and yes, obviously filled out! One which I've seen looks ever so similar to yours as a 2yo (even down to the colour) so great to see the 'after' pictures. thanks everyone for replies, if anyone else has pics would be good to see more

i'm thinking this cross could be the way forward, lovely horses!

The other one in my sig is 3/4 TB 1/4 ID who I bred out of my older mare. Personally I love them, fantastic temperaments

mine is by ID stallion & fine TB mare. I would say he was a chunky TB as a youngster but now that he's 9 he's a definite IDx, although it could be because he had a year off and now has more of a belly.

I can't find one of him on photobucket at the moment to show the difference.

Hi i have quite a few ID/TB photo's PM me your e mail and i will send you some.

IMHO you can't get better than ID/TB

It really depends on the individual and the bloodlines it carries(on the ID and TB side)! You can USUALY tell how they are going to turn out later on by how they look as youngsters(eg. lighter types usually lighter and the heavier usualy heavier), but there is no garuantee as to what you will end up with. But what ever you do end up with, you really can't do any better than a ID or IDx! Here is a couple i have bred
Pilot as a foal. Sire Just Tyson ID, Dam My Suzie Girl TB

Pilot as a yearling winner at RIHS
Pilot7.jpg

Pilot 3rd at HOYS 2005
Pilot6.jpg

and Disko Bay as a foal, same sire, dam Boots TB

and as a 7yr old

Hope this helps(sorry the pics are so big don't know how to shrink them)

Thank you, I always put a ID onto a TB then normally you will end up with a middleweight.

But I'm sure someone will question that. but that's how it works for me.

I thought Irish Sport Horses were just ID x TB?

My horse has an Irish Sports Horse passport; he is by a Welsh D and out of a 1/4 ID 3/4 Tb mare.

irish sports horses were originally irish drafts crossed on tb because they found it was a great combination to produce showjumpers and hunters....

However at some stage something changed in registering ISH and it became posible to add different breeds....there is some rule that one of the parents must be a registered ISH for the foal to be an ISH but it means you can coss a Warmblood to an ISH mare and call the foal an ISH....so all sorts of combinations are called ISH now.....

personally tho i have to admit i love the Draft tb cross the best as all the ISH iv meet of this breeding have had the Draft chilled temperment but the athleticism of the tb...and they tend to be lovely scopey jumpers too...

We bred our ID X TB mare to the same TB sire twice. The foals looked very similar for the first year although the second one was slightly taller. It was only when they were about 2 that we could tell that the second one was going to be heavier built as well as taller.

Now they are 9 and 8 years old repectively the elder one is 15.2hh and very much like a TB in build and temprement. The younger one is 16.3hh and built like an ID.

wow, lovely horses everyone! thank you so much for taking the time to post pictures, gives a great idea of what i'm looking at for the future! simsar, interesting that you say ID on TB gives a more heavy-weight horse, i'll keep that in mind when looking at the breeding of horses I go to see. sorry for the slow reply by the way, been on a short holiday with awful internet! and no idea what the cake is for...my b'day is march so not that!
Edited to correct spelling of Simsar! Sorry

In my experience, that's not always true! I have a sport horse mare by Enniskeane Prince RID out of a TB mare. I went to see her having been told she was a full TB - and didn't see anything to contradict that until I bought her and got her passport!

We've had 4 foals from her - all by my own RID stallion Raj (who is a TRUE HW!) - and all the youngsters look more like a first cross - not 3/4 ID. One of the 'foals' is now in foal to Avanti Amorous Archie (another very chunky RID) and I suspect the foal will STILL look more TB than ID!

Other part breds I've owned - with much smaller percentages of ID - have looked more ID. It's just the way the genes shake up!
