i had a bit of a brainwave and came up with this, it's not perfect (rear uprights should be as close as the front ones, i think, but this is against a building) but it does work and it's still going strong after about a month...!

We have a Bale Buddy that I got shipped over from Canada that is a complete godsend.

It's sort of like yours but you can stick a round bale in it and the horses (touch wood) don't seem to be able to impale themselves on it. Plus we don't have to do hay every day, one round bale lasts them about a week.

I have a similar thing - they have smallish pallets here with sides about 45 cm high that roof slates come in. One of those big cubic builders bags fits neatly inside and the corners are cut down to the top of the wood and the sides folded down and held by the carrying loops. Easy to fill bags and just pop them in.

The best things ever are watermelon shipping crates which are big plastic crates about 1.2m square, with 60cm sides that stand on legs about 20cm high. They are brilliant but I can't get them up here.

no, but it's sort-of porous, the weave of the nylon material would let water out anyway. works so far...
