I decided to weigh my horse this morning and do a condition score. I used the baileys horse feeds condition score page to do it. However, I'm not 100% I did it right? They both need more muscle though.

I have a 15.2hh TB mare, she came in 441Kg. She's 16 (if age helps at all?)

Horse number two is 16.2hh TB gelding, he was 525Kg. He's 5.

Would you say this is an 'okay' weight for them? Or do they need more weight on them, other than muscle?

Thanks in advance :D

Weights aren't a good way to judge condition - there is so much variation in conformation, build etc that will affect it. What were their condition scores?

Both a 4 (Baileys do a 1-9 system) Mare needs more muscle everywhere, but it's always been something she lacked a little, and takes about a year to get a nice round top line and rump, then something happens, like snow! The Gelding is a little ribby, though we aren't underfeeding him and needs a tiny bit more muscle, but he's been off work with a splint and hasn't been in a huge amount of work since being retrained from racing.

NB they are both still in medium weight rugs over night and when it's under 10 degrees or 15 degrees and windy.

4 is fine - don't try to feed them up, just feed enough to support muscle growth which will come with correct work.
