Honestly, I'm getting myself into a right tizz over this.

I HAVE a stubben siegfried jumping saddle. It's nice, I like it, but I need something with straighter cut flaps for general riding. Little ned won't be needing a jumping saddle until end of the year at the earliest.

SO, do you think I should PX for a (new) GP, keep my current and get a VSD, get rid of the jumping saddle altogether and get a new VSD, until later on in the year where I can rebuy again if I want (but I am loathe because I do like my saddle).

I just don't know what to do! So many options and types of saddle etc. I liked the close contact, but when I tried one on little ned when he was a babbie he hated it, but he was only young and lacking in muscle etc, so perhaps he would be ok, plus I have a half pad sheepskin to soften weight on back etc.

In total I'd aim to lose no more than £750ish out my bank account.

I just don't want to ring the saddler up and say "erm, well, I want a saddle, not sure what type..."

Thanks!!

How about....

...keeping your current and getting a Wintec/adjustable-type VSD off E-bay?

I have pondered getting a wintec VSD 2nd hand off e-bay for flat work/schooling .... as I have a nice leather saddle that fits well and I wouldnt want to part with that either.

Blimmin saddles eh

But when you buy off ebay how can you be sure of a correct fit? When getting my stubben we went through a ton of same size saddles before found one that ned was most comfortable in (or bored by...haha). I suppose that is what the adjustable is for actually, oh, good idea!

But do you realy not need a saddler for an adjustable?

I don't like synthetic, they just don't feel 'moulded' enough.

Honestly, you think I'm bad with this, you should see me with rugs!

I actually do like the Mark Todd jumping which is on sale in rideaway, but thats another kettle of fish! :O

Yes, I know what you mean.....

I would think it fine to get an adjustable off e-bay....although certain makes/types are better for others if you know what I mean. I wouldnt buy a Wintec for OH's cob ....she's just too round but I would for my lad and his dammed withers.

I used to have one but sold it when I 'went leather' but TBH I dont think it would be a bad thing to have around esp if your horse changes shape a lot or if he's been on box rest and lost condition/muscle.... its easily adjustable.

keep the jumping, £750 is plenty to spend surely, both my saddles were about £500 2nd hand I have forward GP and an isabell pattern drsg saddle but my saddlers new saddles start at £750 so you shouldn't need to PX you jumping one.

I would ask saddler to bring out a range of saddles for you to try, say you are not sure what you want, they are all different anyway.

Good idea ester!

But unfortunately I now don't know if I want a VSD or a dressage! I'd prefer to have two seperate saddles than one GP. I want the Mark Todd jumping :P I'm scared of getting a dressage as dressage isn't really my thing, I might do a bit, but I'll never go BD, BUT I want the best for neddie.

Now to find a saddler (living in new area!)

Poppymoo - yeah, I had forgot about the adjustable, makes more sense as neddie is only a babe, guess I can only annoy the saddler after all...

Rang the nearest master saddler who will get back to me with an appmt. Felt like a real fool "well, I have a saddle, I like it, it might not fit, I don't know..."

I just told him to bring a lorry full

New or secondhand, £200-700, black or brown (any excuse for a new bridle), leather or synthetic.

Plenty of options, then.

sounds good idea - I have no plans to go BD either but we both very much like our stressage saddle (and as I currently can't put my feet in the stirrups am liking the grippy suede seat!)

I had the GP to start but found I was getting no knee support when doing flat work, the drsg saddle has been lush and it is a flair one which I wouldn't choose for everything but seems to help absorb some of the pones bounciness.

My saddler prefers VSDs for youngsters rather than 'full blown' dressage saddles, I'm guessing because they are a bit lighter? I have an Albion VSD that I feel secure in, puts me in a better position for flatwork but I can hack and pop the odd jump in too.

I like the idea of the saddler with a truck full of saddles for you to play with

Also, why not have a 'saddle party' - get all your friends to come over with all of their saddles and see what types suit his shape and what you like too and then maybe see if you can pick one up second hand?
