As a treat to myself, I'm thinking of hiring a lorry for a couple of days. We're thinking of going to Pembrey for the day. Where else would you recommend we try within an hour of swansea - we're just north of the M4. Would lI've to hear your suggestions.

Have you been on the Gower? There's miles and miles of off-road hacking including many beaches, its amazing! Anywhere around LLangennith or Cefn Bryn would be my recommendation, though there's lots of other places too. :)

If you're where I think you are then you're not far from me :). I'd agree with the Gower!

There's Mynydd Mawr Country Park - loads of cross country jumps up there and it's free. There's also a little school :).

If you want to go a bit further afield then you've got Brechfa Forestry.

Or you can drive to Upper Brynamman and hack directly onto the Brecon Beacons, just be aware of people with scramblers!

Its been a while since I lived there so not sure quite how far away it is, but the Afan Argoed national park is amazing hacking! I worked at a yard inside the park for 9 months and spent my days off hacking out for hours and hours :)

I'd love to ride on the gower but am going to avoid this time of the year - think it'll be too busy. Hadn't though of afan argoed at all, and yet I regularly walk the dogs up there - thanks for the idea. Brechfa is definitely on my list of places to go - think I'm further east than you mydogisanidiot - am in the swansea valley.

Gower is fine this time of the year if you avoid the beaches - or go very early. You'd think that deafeats the purpose, but the hills are every bit as good and the views of the beaches from the top are stunning! Margam also has great hacking - although it's very easy to get lost there if you don't have a local guide or aren't very good with a map!

If you do want to go to the beach Kenfig is quiet most of the year as you have to go through the dunes to get to it - great on horses, not so great if you just want a day sunbathing! Although it's a bit further, if you're close to the M4 it won't take long to get there as it's only 5 mins off the motorway at the other end (Jct 37)
