Sorry about another horsebox thread (for those who missed my earlier thread I'm bouncing off the walls this morning as picking up my first lorry today)

Anyway, my new (to me) lorry has some quite small horse graphics on the side, but nothing about horses on thd front or back.

I was thinking of getting a "Horses" decal for the back but just wondering what people's thoughts are. Do you think other drivers take any notice or drive differently if they know you might be carrying horses?

If so what do other people have? I quite like a simple "caution horses" , whereas I think " Horses , keep back" could irritate other drivers.

I saw quite a good one on ebay, but it was in Australia. It said something like "My horse does not corner as well as your car, slow aceleration, gradual braking and wide cornering. Please stay back" Anyone seen anything like that available here?

I have had the same wording on my last 3 lorries, and have had very little trouble with irate people since.

It says...

CAUTION

LIVE LOAD

Slow cornering

Early braking

I don't mention horses at all, as many people do not like them.

Before that I had a huge amount of abuse including cutting up, hooting horns, shaking fists etc. Since.... nothing!

I like this, I think once you mention horses, you automatically annoy people. I had nothing on mine except for the obligatory do not overtake turning vehicle signs.

HORSES on it's own should do fine. Although I have always been tempted to try VERY LARGE HAMSTERS and see how many eejits follow one and ask to see them.

But very exciting that you have a wagon. Please show and tell!

I have three on my lorry:

A no overtaking bicycles on the left yellow sign

A 'caution slow vehicle' sign which does have a picture of a horse , I have placed this so it's just over driver eye height

And finally an 'if you can't see my mirrors I can't see you' sign

There are also two orange and yellow chevrons and a little sticker that says 'it's not leaking oil it's sweating power' lol

My Horsebox is 30 years old and painfully slow but I just pull over and let cars past where possible. Despite it clearly being a Horsebox no one has caused me any grief beyond some silly tailgating

Just bought a cute little bumper sticker with a cartoon horse saying something like " Please give us space as we take longer stopping"

Will think about what else to have once I have actually collected it!

When you pick it up, remember the speedo (tacho) has the big figures in km! Or will do unless it's a museum piece....you need to look at the little numbers to see yr speed in mph.

Don't be worried if you find it a big monster, practice is the way....can easily take 20 or 30 hours before you really feel confident!

I once saw a sign on a lorry (not horse lorry) that said
TOO CLOSE FOR 60
TOO CLOSE FOR 50
TOO CLOSE FOR 40

And each line was in decreasing font size so at a certain distance the 'safe' speeds for that distance blurred out. Wish I could buy one

the one I Invented

**CAUTION SLOW BRAKING
HORSES DON'T WEAR SEAT BELTS**

Then a standard one

IF YOU CANT SEE MY MIRRORS
I CANT SEE YOU

I am in limbo now as I just sold my box she left me yesterday

and situation changed Contrary to my early plan

I am buying another horse box - much newer and such a beautiful blue electric never seen one this colour before now I have a horse to compete on

I am picking my box up tomorrow

so excited but sad as I had the last one 18 years but she has gone to a lovely family who knew about her issues and took her on regardless they have plans for her to chaperone their beautiful pony round to shows.

They were such the perfect buyers for her came to see her Thursday drove her round the field loved her made an offer we haggled accepted each other offer and then they collected her 2 days later Saturday.

How funny, I was thinking about this just this morning, as I was dreaming about having my own lorry. I like the 'slow braking, horses don't wear seat belts' one.

My first horsebox I found failed the pre purchase test
2nd one Was at £ 18000 I said what is your lowest they said £ 16.500 on that basis we went to view ( it was huge ) 26 feet compare to mine 24. Liked it, Told the guy we were interested and he said * the lady who came yesterday cannot get her mechanic out today as it is Sunday I called mine and arranged Monday . Mechanic came - found some issues which could be sorted in time.

I called guy immediately back said it went well and I wanted it, he turned round and said oh er, I will call you back. He did not he text me and said the other lady offered full price. I thought how come she did not have the mechanic out for a few days* She used my mechanics say so to offer the price basing on the fact mine passed it and must be ok as I going for it. Bit underhanded if you ask me since I got my mechanic out first and said I wanted it before she did.

Anyway not dwelling on it as my new box is newer ( 2003 not 1999 like his one ) and a Beautiful colour and much nicer inside than his one anyway so 3rd time lucky after 2 bad starts

If anyone's interested I've found a similar sign on TailGuardian website.
