my horse is off all winter resting - well supposed to be resting from an injury. he is a very playful sort anyway but this has now been magnafied ten fold and to be honest he's a bit of a brat at the moment. we've got the box rest phase out of the way so he's now been turned out in flat paddock in the day on his own tho he can see and touch other horses. he chews everything in sight-whether thats fence, tape, water buckets, other horses. he's got quite nippy with me and the more i tell him off the harder he nips me! if anybody leaves anything anywhere near him he'll destroy it and he kicks the wall when tied up. i know he's just bored so what could i do with him?? there is only so much grooming and trimming one can do! do you just ignore your annoying horses??

I have one of these. I try and ignore him if at all possible because what he is after, ultimately, is a reaction/attention from me.Even if it is a negative one! He also gets much worse when not in work.

How much is he allowed to do. Is he allowed to go for a walk in hand?

ye from jan he can start to do some in hand work, backing up etc etc which will help. must be hard going from full work to nothing but seriously there is only so much annoyance one owner can take!!

I bet. I get buckets thrown at me, rugs thrown on the floor, his newest one is that he has learnt to undo door bolts. I was standing on the yard next to my filly the other day talking and he suddenly appeared behind me. Little sod had let himself out WHEN WE WERE WATCHING.
When I do up rug straps he turns round and pushes my jumper and coat up and slobbers on my kidneys. If I leave the broom in reach over his door he trys to sweep the yard with his teeth, if I leave his headcollar in reach he tries to put it on himself.

Sound familiar? I do sympathise. When he's in work it's just cute and funny but it escalates when I can't ride him. He starts to tank me to the field and nip me on the backside instead of slobber.

Not long until you can start doing again. Hopefully things will get back to normal then :)

Does he have any toys? They don't have to be expensive horse toys. Those round rubber feed tubs can be fun for them to pick up and fling around. A traffic cone. An empty milk jug rinsed out and hung from a piece of hay string. I found a set of hard plastic keys that were made for teething dogs - hung them in my girl's stall and she lips at them and keeps herself occupied.

Just make sure it's nothing he can hurt himself on but if he'll play with stuff, it will save wear and tear on you.

ye he's had toys but then either breaks them or gets frustrated that he cant break them so gives up. still, cheap home made toys are a better option!
jess- you hit the nail on the head! its cute/funny when there in work but not so fun when its day after day. yep, i get rugs on the floor then pawed, brooms and shovels chewed within an inch of their lives. bend down to pick out feet and get my back or bum slobbered and nipped. oh the joys!

I have an annoying one too! Jumps in and out of the field at will, tips over water troughs, breaks the ball on the permanent ones, wrecks her own rugs.... None of that occurs (except the water troughs) when she's in full work - but it's WINTER now, and that's not possible!

The only thing that I will say in favour of brown horse is that he is really good with rugs that are actually on a horse. If you leave them over the door they're fair game but once they're on him or Nitty he is very good.

I'd have to shoot him if he wrecked all my rugs!
