Well, my last post was about me riding for the first time in 5 months following an RTA......

Had a fabulous ride, but my knee has given way again since and I am now waiting for more surgery and the fact that I wont be riding for a long time to come, so, back to my friend and instructor riding Ralph

Has anyone any ideas about having fun with your horse on the ground, not just lunging or any interesting ways to lunge? Or are there any parelli type things we can do? All ideas greatly appreciated as its gonna be a long haul

Going for little hacks in hand, I used to that with pickle after a while I could let him off to canter for a bit then he would wait for me (allthough I know this isnt possible for a lot of horses!)

Pickle really is one in a million

You could try long-reining.
Also proper in-hand work, so horse on a lunge line/cavesson, side reins to the bit and you standing facing the shoulder side at right angles to the horse. You hold a stick in the hand closest the tail and the lunge line in the other hand and you can do lateral work and all sorts

clicker training. i did it when i had one on box rest, getting her to look around the stable for stuff and touch it with her nose, very rewarding. you can really see them thinking, trying to work out what you want them to do.

loose schooling? When I couldnt ride harry, I taught him trec skills, such as standing in one place for a length of time. Is so so useful, and he's now as good as my mates labrador, I say 'stand!' and I can come back 5 minutes later and he wont have moved, is excellent for hacks, emergencies etc. Have also taught him to come to me when I say his name, which again is good for convenience and safety, say I fall off on a hack for example! Um, voice commands of all sorts can be really useful.. think everything else had been said
