I'm have one problem with my horse that is making me want to give up on him.

I took him out a few times after he was broken, and he was fine.

However now when I take him out as soon as I get in the collecting ring, he gets over excited. He's bucked me off a few times, while out.

Yesterday I took him to a clear round x-country as I knew itd be really quiet, and it was, yet the second I got in the collecting ring. He started messing me about, going sideways, leaping and snorting etc. I was walking with a friend, but didn't help.
In the end I got upset and got off, my friend got on him and rode him for a bit, popped the practice fence fine.
I got back on had little trot, that was it.
He's getting really excited, and it's a sort of napping.
I'm going to take him out few more times but not compete.

Also have tried magnesium and that doesn't work.

Any suggestions would be great. He's such a lovely horse, but this is wearing thin now.

I might have got wrong end of the stick, so if I have. Im sorry! from your thread it comes across as though the horse is young/newly broken...? if this is the case then a cross country course is asking far too much too much from him and this could be the cause of your problems.

Sorry, no he was broken nearly 2 years ago. He has been cross country before.
I didn't take him yesterday to go round the course. It was purely ride round the collecting ring then go home.

If he's a young horse, it's all a matter of experience. Can you take him out a few times to some local in hand shows, walk him around the collection ring then take him home, also try to take him to new places without the 'show' atmosphere, i.e hire a school locally, box there and school him so he gets used to going out but without the added 'show' excitement. You could also try lunging in a 'spare' area (not the collecting ring) just to get him settled. Some places say no lunging, others are happy for you to do so if there is sufficient room. Once he's lunged for about 5 mins, get on yourself.

Hadnt thought of hiring a school thats a good idea.

I do have some more things that I can go along to, so do want to do that.

I started having lessons to try and sort this, but problem is, hes lovely at home so it kind of defeats the object. :(
