Hi, im hoping to get tickets for the CrossCountry Day but was wondering whether anybody had any ideas of where would be good to stay, as I think iit would be quite a long day to travel there and back on the same day,

Someone posted on here (today or yesterday I think) about wanting to rent out their spare room to people coming down for the Olympics.

Anywhere in London would be quicker to get back to than Swansea so you don't necessarily need somewhere on the doorstep. Also if you are going to drive, you could stay west London way close to M4 and then tube/train to Greenwich park. Hotels may be cheaper away from the Olympic sites.
Good luck getting tickets, I am hoping to get xc tickets too:D

All the nearby hotels are already fully booked for people involved with the Olympics. You will have to stay further out & tube in I think, thats why Greenwich is such a stupid place to hold it, too small, too difficult to get to.

If we get tickets we'll be staying with my Mum in Hampshire - only an hour on the train and whatever it takes on the tube, so easy enough to do in the day and a lot cheaper than trying to find somewhere to stay in London. I'd look further afield than London but a bit closer than Swansea :D

I will be renting out a couple of my spare rooms for the duration on a bed and breakfast basis. Ive planned to go to an event most days (assuming the ballot works in my favour!) so will be planning on getting a bit of the cost back. I live 30 by train from london.

This may be an idea.

The Peterborough line out of Kings Cross runs parallel to the A1. At least as far as Huntingdon, there are Travel lodges and other low cost hotels within a couple of miles of many of the train stations. All these stations are within an hour of Kings Cross.

Good luck.

You can camp in my garden if you like. (now have an image in my head of a Glastonbury type event springing up over night in my back garden...). I live at the end of the Metropolitan Line.

Anyone living a long way away only has to take a look at the underground map and find an appropriate way into London like the Met Line etc and then find a B & B or similar at the end of it.

I expect it would take something like an hour and a half to get over to that side of London from here (Amersham).

It is situated on the south bank of the River Thames in south-east London. National rail to Greenwich station and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to Greenwich and Cutty Sark stations provide access from central London and other London 2012 venues. Blackheath rail station also serves Greenwich Park. Take a look at the tube map below and find the nearest end of line to you and then start googling for camp sites and keeping fingers crossed for good weather - of course that is the "on a shoestring" effort.

I live in Milton Keynes, fast trains run every 15 minutes and they take 30 minutes from MK to Euston.

It's very quick to get into London from here and places will be cheaper to stay.

Ramada Inn, Holiday Inn, Jury's Inn, Premier Inn (all the inn's lol) in Central Milton Keynes have rooms available for x-country 2 days before and 2 days after.

My spare room?? We're lucky we're only about 30mins away by bus - less by taxi/car/train. Hadn't thought about renting out spare room but that's a very good idea!!

One worth a look is a new hotel that is being built at the moment near Swanley (J3 M25 / A20 junction) which shouldn't be too bad to get to the XC from (further than me but not bad if you will have your car).

Its a premier inn I think (with a Harvester onsite) but if not a premier its "one of those" type places so you should be able to find it on t'internet. As its not finished yet (due this summer) it might not be booked up. I think the road is still called Maidstone Road at that point and the area will be listed as Swanley, or possibly Ruxley/Sidcup at a push as its on the road between the two but nearer Swanley.

fab info thanks guys going to save this thread and look up all the info you have given me, i have never been to london before and never travelled anywhere by train (except local) so I think it is going to ba one big adventure,

might go for the option of booking in to one of the travel lodges near to a rail line as people have said closer than swansea and I dont particularly want to be driving all the way home might as well make a holiday of it,

I just wish it was somewhere like badminton (ohhh cant wait for that either camping for the week up there)

I will be re posting on here if I cant find anything closer to the time and end up taking up offers of camping in back gardens and sharing lifts in to the park lol
