I need some help please - my poor elderly mare has cushings/laminitis/aneamia/thin soles/hole in the sole (from horrible infection) - she is now not really eating much, she will only eat dry food i.e. her balancer pellets + fibre cubes and now won't eat soaked hay :( so I can only wet that now.

Because of all this, I have to syringe all meds including Prascend and Dannillon, except I am struggling with the Dannillon, it keeps getting clogged in the syringe. I have cut off the ends of the syringes which has helped a bit, but if anyone has any tips please let me know. Thanks.

Prascend tab will break in half and is tasteless so easily disguised just chucked in with a crunchy mix or pellets. Danillon, have you tried slicing the delivery bit of the tube lengthwise as well as slicing a bit off? Don't cut anything off, just slice it an inch or so. This allows it to expand a tiny bit and also the Danillon can ooze out for the whole length of the pointy bit. Do get it well inside her mouth though.

Just wanted to add that it may be time to start thinking about quality of life issues poppet xxxxx

You can get syringes specifically for this sort of this which have much wider nozzles and work well. Speak either to your feed store or vet.

Tip from a vet a few years ago, you need to be slightly organised if horse not at home - but. Mix drug into some soft 'margerine' such as Flora that has been mixed with dry icing sugar.

This means you aren't attempting to syringe liquid which is easily spat out, and tastes sweet with the icing sugar. If sugar (not much required though) is an issue then 'margerine' on its own or with a few drops of peppermint food flavouring would do.

You do need a dosing syringe though.

Get a large dosing syringe from vet or farmstore - not a small wormer type.

Buy some pureed baby food (mine like apple & carrot) and mix danilon granules with the puree and syringe into the mouth.

Tip given to me a Thoroughbred Stud manager.

Big syringe with wide nozzle, dissolve it in warm water. Apple baby food mixed in makes it sticky so they can't spit it out!

You can get feeding syringes from the pharmacy. They are huge and the tips are very wide, so perfect for syringing stuff into horse's mouths.

Yes, don't worry Box of Frogs, we are only going to give the foot 6 more weeks to show improvement, so I can see a light at the end of this long tunnel. If the sole (which is her major issue atmo) does not start to harden up and granulate, then she will never be able to go out as the bone is far too near the sole now. She has rotated 4.5 degrees on both fronts - which isn't as bad as some, which is why it's so heart breaking to just have this one horrible foot that is has a small, red very thin (bleeds easily) patch, exactly where the laminae are i.e. 2cm in front of the tip of frog. She is really bright and perky, too bloody perky sometimes :D getting all het up over nothing, whizzing round the box and kicking it bless, she just hates foot, which is quite sad as she used to love it.

Re. the Prascend, she was taking them brilliantly pushed into a slice of apple, but now, she knows they are there and won't touch the apple and I'm afraid, she can smell them unfortunately, as it's a real pain to keep crushing them and syringing them.
Thanks for all the tips on Dannillon, I use an apple puree but cold water, so will try warm water and also slice the tip of the dosing syringe. The vet said it was a dosing syringe, but after reading all the replies, I'm now wondering if there are fatter ones out there - off to look now, thanks peeps :)

Try popping the mixture on a a wooden spoon and wiping it on her tongue as far back as you can. This has worked well for me in the past plus I have used toothpaste instead of baby food as it sticks to the spoon better until you get the knack!
