Ideas please for rehoming.

My daughter has a year old patterdale x lakeland dog who although is lovely in the house and beautiful tempered he is particulary good at what he is bred for (hunting), she has now realised she cannot give him the sort of home he needs (would make a great working dog) Does anyone have any ideas who she could contact about rehomeing him.
 
Could she perhaps channel his instinct into something else? Like as someone else once mentioned, terrier racing or going to agility class?
Or as Sali says, contact a hunt or shoot.

Keekee, some dogs have incredibly strong prey/working drives, bred into them for generations, and need a little more than just to be a house pet, their brains need a lot of exercise and they 'prefer' to be occupied or else they can become destructive or naughty.
 
He has incredibly strong hunting instinct and once he has a scent he is gone which means you cannot walk him off the lead, which is unfair. Her boyfriend bought him for her, we were thrilled! She is at uni, he lives up with her (in a town) and then comes home to us in the holidays where he cannot be let out of the house without a lead as we have chickens, sheep and pheasants. She has tried everything with him but instinct always win, he would make a great terrier mans dog.
 
If she doesn't have the time or the inclination to do some hardcore training/finding an activity they can do together, then it is probably for the best.
I understand, must be difficult, that's what can happen when you have breeds of this kind, especially a cross.

Well done for trying to find a more suitable home for him, please keep us posted. Cayla may be someone to ask about how to go about best rehoming him.
 
She is gutted, but if i'm honest i'm delighted she has come to this decision, she hasn't got the time for a dog and though a very sweet gesture on behalf of bf it is totally the wrong time and the wrong sort of dog for her. He has looked after him for a time but he is also on a farm which is not suitable for the dog (sheep, sheep and more sheep) I'm concerned that his hunting will take him to the wrong place at the wrong time and he will be shot or snared. I may contact some of the hunts around.

If you get stuck I seriously know a number of people who would work him/look after him well.
 
I think now she has made the decision it would be nice to sort it out asap. She has the dog up in shropshire atm, is in south wales most weekends but could come home with him.
